Not very good. Definitely NOT worth the price it goes for nowadays., December 9, 2010
This review is from: Green Lantern: The Road Back (Paperback)
First of all, the art is terrible. I'm not usually that picky (I enjoy classic as well as modern styles), but this was pretty bad.
Secondly, if you got Emerald Dawn and Emerald Dawn II, this is not the next book you want to get. This story is about the tail end of Hal Jordan's career before he becomes the evil Parallax (Emerald Twilight). I got this along with both Emerald Dawns and Emerald Twilight figuring I would get a brief beginning, middle, and tragic end of Hal Jordan's career as the Green Lantern. The Road Back is about Hal being a washed up hero who is unsure of his place in the world, but no longer wants to be a Green Lantern.
The writing is mixed, but mostly bad. Hal's internal dialogue and journey is good for what it is, but the plot to bring him back into the fold is really quite silly. The last remaining Guardian in this world, the "Old Timer," goes insane and starts stealing cities from places he's been to all over the universe because he's alone. I like that he goes insane because he's never been alone during his considerably long existence, but stealing cities he's been to and bringing them to Oa is a ridiculous idea. Granted, this is a comic book and I could normally overlook this, however; the Old Timer is extremely out of character. He is a Guardian. Even if he decided to do such a crazy thing, he would still have the need to protect and oversee the safety of the different races he brings to Oa. Instead he punishes them and uses them as mindless soldiers to protect his position as supreme ruler on Oa. I can see him being an unwitting threat to their safety because he can't see the damage he's doing as a result of his desperate need to connect. But not this.
DON'T DO IT! Unfortunately, there isn't much collected in tpb form that fits in between Emerald Dawn II and Emerald Twilight, but something like Willworld or Tales of the Green Lantern Corps vol 1. might fill the void until they reprint some other stuff.

Superhero with Human Problems, November 6, 2000
This review is from: Green Lantern: The Road Back (Paperback)
This book starts off at the point where Hal Jordan, ex-Green Lantern of sector 2814, had decided to give up being a Green Lantern (GL). He decided that being a GL had severely affected his personal life, and thus decided to start a normal life. However, Guy Gardner, another GL, is sore that he is Earth's GL only because Hal gave up the responsibility. Thus he keeps disrupting Hal's new life, and refuses to leave Hal alone. Things take a turn for the worse when a crazy Guardian decided to start his own collection of cities from around the universe. The book focuses a lot on Hal's thoughts, about the choices he has made, and what he wants out of his life. I would not recommend this book, unless one is into heavy issues in life.
