4.0 out of 5 stars Packed with Information, August 29, 2010
By
This review is from: Green Mountain Club Long Trail Guide: Hiking Vermont's High Ridge (Vermont Hiking Trails Series) (Paperback)
Last fall my fiancee and I went on a two-week long backpacking vacation along the Long Trail. We started at at the beginning of the trail in Massachusetts, and headed north with this book in our pocket.

Overall it does a great job of providing all sorts of basic information about the trail. The Long Trail Guide is broken up into several major divisions, with a really decent index - so it's always easy to find information about the trail or area that you're interested in. Major features of the trail are covered, so it's easy to follow along and make sure you stay on track. This guide also covers a whole bunch of side trails, so if you're interested in taking a small detour then you'll have all of the info you need. Another helpful feature is the inclusion of parking info, which really helps to plan a trip when you're trying to figure out where you can enter/exit the trail.

The only really significant downside of this book is that the majority of that maps you'll be following are printed right in the book, which is pretty small at about 4" x 6". While this size is great for packing logistics, it can be a bummer to use such small maps. We brought along the Vermont's Long Trail Waterproof Hiking Map and the two products complimented each other perfectly. Highly recommended combination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well received gift, February 7, 2009
This review is from: Green Mountain Club Long Trail Guide: Hiking Vermont's High Ridge (Vermont Hiking Trails Series) (Paperback)
This book was purchased upon request as a holiday gift. As the purchaser, my only beef is with Amazon. When odering through one-click using standard delivery, which usually incurs no delivery charge, a shipping & handling fee of about four dollars was added to the total cost. This cost is only tacked on AFTER the order is placed, it is not apparent when ordering. $4 is a significant percentage of the total purchasing cost. I was told this was due to the seller, a Vermont non-profit organization, which is fine by me. However, Amazon needs to be more transparent about these added shipping charges. Otherwise, the book itself was exactly what was wanted - but Amazon's shipping policy takes off one star in this review.
