Now I am addicted to this series - I can't wait for book four!, November 23, 2011
This review is from: In Green Pastures : A Frontier Novel (Mysterious Ways # 3) (Kindle Edition)
In Green Pastures: A Frontier Novel by Donna Westover Gallup is the third in the Mysterious Ways series. As Charlie continues to grow into manhood, he learns about love, the world and continues to find adventure. His faith also grows as he works through the conflicts that he encounters. In his travels Charlie encounters the James Gang, relatives that he did not know and unravels some of his family's past history. He learns more about his mother and father, who he never knew. This book, like her others, are suitable for young adults as well as adults. The underlying Christian theme offers a solid foundation that young people can relate to in their Christian growth. Ms. Gallup has woven more mystery into this novel and I for one, are looking forward to see what happens next in her fourth book.

Highly Recommend "In Green Pastures", January 10, 2010
I highly recommend Donna Westover Gallup `s book "In Green Pastures". It will keep you wanting to turn to the next page and keep reading. I found myself not wanting to put it down. It really is that good.
The story is set in the Colorado territory and Saint Charles, Missouri in 1872. The author provides superb characters. There is Charlie Smith. He is eighteen and has a strong Christian faith. There is Grandpa (Stuart Smith). Charlie has lived with his grandfather since age three. Grandpa is his best friend, father figure, and spiritual mentor. We have Wilbur Tuttle, the neighbor. There is Dixie the Denver café owner and her granddaughter Rebecca. We meet Jessie and Frank James. Lonnie, Sgt Peterson, LeFaye and McQueen join us in the story. In Saint Charles we meet the sheriff, Aunt Rose, Jonathan, Rachel, Ryan, and Charlie's grandmother on his mother's side of the family.
The story has Charlie and Grandpa heading to Denver to take care of business. They enroll Charlie for the next semester at the new University of Denver. Grandpa updates his will leaving everything to Charlie. This is important because he has 40 acres of land near Pueblo, Colorado. That is where Charlie grew up. Grandpa had also recently inherited 600 acres and over five million dollars from his cousin Ralph which he also gives Charlie in his will. While in Denver Grandpa has a heart attack and dies.
Charlie takes his grandfather back to the family place in near Pueblo for burial. Nakima the Ute Indian comes to pay his respects to his deceased friend and teaches Charlie a grizzle bear dance and chant/song that Charlie later uses to help save himself in Missouri.
Next Charlie decides to go to Missouri to check on his inheritance. We learn of the adventures they he has along the way including meeting Jessie and Frank James when they rob the train he is riding on.
When we get to Saint Charles the book takes a twist and turns into a mystery novel/thriller. Charlie is confronted with persons trying to kidnap, kill and steal his inheritance. We learn the truth about his parent's death and his "family" in Saint Charles. I am left with a big question mark about his relationship with Rebecca. We learn that he has a sister, but never meet her though enough clues were given to make me wonder if she is ... It is a story that includes trusting God, loving your family, and facing the challenges life throws your way.
I hope there is a follow-up book that includes some of the same characters. They are great characters that do not need to be put out to pasture.
The book is wonderful. It should be in every community library. In Green Pastures is book three of the "Mysterious Ways" Series. I highly recommend all three books in the series. "White as Snow" is book one. "Rock of Refuge" is book two. You will enjoy the book without having read book one or two. It stands alone very well. My guess is if you read book three, you'll go back and read book one and two. It's that good! Thank you Donna Westover Gallup for such a wholesome and inspirational book and series.
