Product Description

Historically, cultures that gained the most benefit from cod liver took the necessary time and effort to hand craft and ferment them. The major benefit of fermentation is it keeps the delicate nutrients intact and actually increases them. This products contains 1/3 X Factor Gold High Vitamin Butter Oil and 2/3 Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver oil

5.0 out of 5 stars The best overall health supplement, tips on taking it October 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
You really can't get a much better overall single health supplement than this. Cod liver oil harvested naturally with no heat/bleaching/deoderizing/filtering providing a natural vitamin A and D powerhouse, and butter oil taken specifically from cows during the spring when the grass is most nutritious for the most 'activator x' which I believe is now known as vitamin k2. It provides a whole range of natural vitamins and fats in a food form, which is much more effective than the synthetic supplements made in labs. I think in this age of 'nutrition marketing' we forget that synthetic supplements are basically ways for companies to mimick natural sources of nutrients in the cheapest way possible.

Ok, so now for the taste part, since the best supplement in the world doesn't do much if you can't get it down. I started out with the pills but the gel is ridiculously more economical and I like to take much more than the dose on the label. My first try of the gel was a total failure, I had to spit it out. But I realized my two mistakes, taking it at room temperature and using a spoon. So here's my recommendation on how to take it with ease:

First, refrigerate. Second, use a Butter Knife and your teeth instead of a spoon and your tongue/lips.
With a spoon you have to use your tongue or lips to scrape it off the concave surface, that's what gets it stuck to your mouth and makes you really taste it in all its glory. Instead, take the refrigerated cod liver oil (nice and firm from the cold) and put a bunch on the Butter Knife tip as if it were whipped butter. Then stick it in your mouth and scrape it off in one stroke with JUST your front teeth. Since the knife is flat like your front teeth you'll get almost all of it off. It'll also be in a nice ball shape which you can easily swallow almost like a large pill with a gulp of water or juice. Between being cold and using the knife I barely taste it at all and only the cinnamon comes through and tastes kind of like apple cider (which is also a great drink to wash this down with cause it goes with the cinnamon). The cold also greatly cuts down the smell.

I've been seeing a lot of good reviews of this brand, especially from the Weston Price folks who are very picky about their food. I hope that as they grow they continue to keep the high quality level and natural manufacturing processes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spicy! October 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll have to follow up on how we feel using the product, but I'll say that the cinnamon is extremely spicy! Warm upon receiving it, we all had some and it wasn't pleasant. My just-turned 3 year old spit it out into his water cup and then drank some water -- and got the gel on his face, which turned red from the irritation of the oil. I retrieved the bo/fclo gel and put it into some warmed milk, hoping that it would melt and he could drink it. Nope. It softened it, though. He eventually got it all down, but it wasn't easy. I kept encouraging him to finish.

This a.m. I just got the knife out and put his into a ball, which he swallowed and then chased with water. Easy-Peasey, as the kids would say. Thank you all for your reviews and advice about knife/teeth. Wonderful suggestion.

I thought to spread it on some toast this morning, but instead put it into some morning porridge to test it first. So glad that I did. It is like eating a pack of Big Red gum on steroids. Not pleasant. My kids would've left it uneaten and wasted product and food.

Eat it straight like a pill. You won't necessarily need water, but you might keep it handy just in case.

I don't find it disgusting, but wish that there was less cinnamon oil in it. Maybe the strong cinnamon is the lesser of the two evils! lol And you all may know, cinnamon is used to help control appetite, so think of it as a diet aid. :)

****Update:

We have finished our bottle and I will say that after the first few days, it was easy to take. My 3 year old rarely balked (twice in over a month) when given it. Only two of my children would drink water afterwards as it didn't seem so spicy. It will still burn if put on skin, though, so be careful. I found it pleasurable and would lick the butter knife afterwards. No fishy aftertaste. No burping seconds at any time.

Take it cold -- leaving it at room temp for 5 minutes is too long. Use a butter knife and scrape off with your teeth. Swallow. Drink water if necessary afterwards.

I started trying this out recently. It is actually a lot better than I thought. I keep it in the refrigerator so the taste is fine to me and it is easy to take. I actually like the taste of it, it is like cinnamon gooey candy because of the Stevia and Cassia oil.

Unfortunately, when buying this direct on amazon the sellers start to get GREEDY and sell it for unreasonable prices.
PLEASE be Aware if they charge more than $59.99 they are trying to make a profit and rip people off.
If you were to buy this from the green pastures site directly it would cost $49.00 and about $6-$10 shipping.
Please try to avoid the sellers here on amazon who are taking advantage by charging $60 or more...they are being deceitful.

I am giving the product itself 4 stars because it seems to be okay so far and I like the taste. I will have to update later though on if it has helped anything specifically like tooth re-mineralization, etc.

The ingredients on the bottle are: fermented cod liver oil, Butter oil, Cassia oil, Stevia, and Silica.

Update 1: After about a week or so of using this, I do find that the back of my throat does feel like I am getting a sore throat because of the Cinnamon in this. I think because they use Cinnamon (Cassia) Oil it is burning through the skin in the throat. Even though it tastes good on its own, to avoid damaging your throat I suggest that if you take this in the mornings you follow it right away with water or some healthy non-acidic liquid to help it from hurting the throat in the long run.

Update 2:
After getting a second bottle from a different Lot. I do find the taste is a bit more offensive..Since the texture and color of the second one was darker I believe it was mislabeled and was actually the chocolate flavor one. The Chocolate Flavor one has a more fishy and harder to swallow taste. I do not recommend that flavor.
So I can see why some of the reviews on here about taste vary. It depends on what batch you get or the possibility that you got the wrong flavor in the wrong bottle??? My 3rd bottle tasted more like the first one I got so I am more convinced that the second one was a flavor mix-up on the company's part.
The first one I tried was from a Lot# that was set to expire in 2013. The Second bottle I tried is from a Lot# that is due to expire in 2014. So really it is dependent on the batch your bottle comes from!
