Amazon.com Review

Deep down in the ocean, strange things happen, acts of love that are unfamiliar to the human eye: Anchovies mate in large orgies; shrimp strip down to get in the mood; starfish can do it two different ways; whales fight to make love.

Inspired by the wonderfully odd and humorous short films created by Isabella Rossellini and released on DVD for the first time, Green Porno offers a visually arresting and scientifically accurate look at the sex lives of marine animals and other creatures. This book will make you see the animal kingdom as you never have before.

A Look Inside Green Porno (Click on Images to Enlarge)

As a shrimp, Isabella peels off her outer layer to molt. Anglerfish attract their prey with a luminous lure. A moment of passion between two squid.

About the Author

Isabella graced the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Vanity Fair, becoming one of the most iconic models of the 1980s. Her acting career includes such films as David Lynch's Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci's Big Night, Peter Weir's Fearless, and The Saddest Music in the World directed by Guy Maddin. Isabella wrote the script to My Dad is 100 Years Old, also directed by Guy Maddin, an homage to her father, the filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, and her mother, Ingrid Bergman. Green Porno is Isabella's directorial debut. She lives in New York City.

The book is cute but it is the video that is hysterical.

Although the DVD is toted as an additional feature of the book, I consider the writings secondary to the short films themselves.

She has an amazing story telling ability and speaks volumes with just one expression or body position.

Isabella Rossellini has used her status as actor, model, and animal activist to produce a work that adheres to each level of her career while providing an entertaining, informative product. "Green Porno" effectively mixes elements of humor, surrealism, and science to lay bare all the activities one only previously assumed the animal kingdom participated in - debauchery and sexual gratification to the extreme. The short films themselves are self-contained fast facts that both shock and amaze in their collaboration of the extremely suggestive (Rossellini's gyrating hips and oversized sexual organs) and the juvenile (cartoons and puppetry). The end result? A fascinating dive into the sexual behaviours intrinsic to all life, putting forth applicable questions of gender, sexual mores, sadomasochism, and even metaphorical cannibalism. Even greater appreciation must be heaped upon Rossellini's shoulders in her frank debasement of rhetoric and the carnal underscore apparent in many common English phrases. While these elements are abstract and certainly collegiate principals, the material is never pretentious beyond its admittedly odd turn in the final segment "Elephant Seals." Animal rights are brought under scruity by both Isabella and a biologist during the second series "Marine Animals", but the revelations are not as distracting as one might assume.

Although the DVD is toted as an additional feature of the book, I consider the writings secondary to the short films themselves. The stills, however, further fuel the argument that Isabella could land a Lancôme contract even at her current age. In any event, "Green Porno" is a true erotic education from earthworm to whale, and one would be amiss to overlook the sexual artistry.

I saw these some of these videos in London at the Natural History Museum this summer (2011) in a special exhibit called SEXUAL NATURE. I could not believe how well they were done and how hilarious they were. The Museum shop had the book and DVD for sale and I snatch it up, spending way more in British Pounds then if I had waited and gotten it at AMAZON---this is a steal for the price. A wonderful coffee table book for those who have a sense of humor.

I had seen the author interviewed on television, so knew about her very creative work. The pictures in the book showing her costumns for the teaching aspect are super. Her work is delightful, funny, shocking and colorful all at once. The choice of color is great and descriptions really cannot do the book justice. L Holt

Really, this book is just a teaser for Rossellini's wonderful short films about the strange and wonderful lives of our fellow species. Note to the sensitive: this includes how big people of each species make little baby people of same species. As long as you and yours are cool with Nat Geo's bunny shows, this will just be an amusing frolic. If you're zero-tolerance in the reproduction department - move along there's nothing to see here.

Since you're still with me, this offers a charming introduction to a few species, familiar and unfamiliar. The presentation involves simple puppetry (often just paper cutouts), and even simpler costuming. Each of the book's sections take just a few pages, reflecting the few-minute format of each video it represents. There's a bit of eco-message in some of these piece, but not many, and not nearly as shrill as one might fear. Mostly, it just delights in the wonderful lives of our fellow beings, and in how their lives differ so very much from our own. And, within the limits of the format, this presents some good, solid science. My only regret in Rossellini's presentation is that there aren't more of her with more different interests.

As much as I like this book, it's just a shadow of Rossellini's videos. They're available on-line (and in the book's enclosed DVD), and are truly charming.Highly recommended for anyone, especially with kids, as long as everyone's comfortable with the boy-girl thing.

I'm a huge fan of Isabella Rossellini after seeing a couple of her Green Porno skits in the Sundance Channel. She's hilarious, and I was so happy to find this book super cheap. I was even more excited when I found out it had a DVD that included the skits. It's a great book, and the shows are very educative. She combines comedy and education, and she does an absolutely great job. I hope she keeps making these shows. Check out her "Seduce Me" skits!

After watching the DVD and then reading the book, all we can say is that we want more, more and more of Rossellini's creative genius. She has an amazing story telling ability and speaks volumes with just one expression or body position. Green Porno is one of the most unique ways we know to learn about the animal kingdom and their mating habits. Funny, charming, thought provoking! Little wonder this talented artist is now taking Green Porno to the Broadway stage.

The book is adorable, but the accompanying DVD is the icing in the cake. Artistry, puppetry, and a little insanity make for good entertainment.

Mere words cannot convey my sheer delight in this series. Squee! Is close.
Intelligent, informative, creative and dare I say, erotic.
I highly recommend to all--- even if you could care less about the mating rituals of barnacles or snail reproduction. Yes -- I said barnacles... you've gotta see it to appreciate it
