5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide that makes you WANT to eat healthy!
I really liked this book, and I was surprised to find that I learned a few things (even beyond some really yummy recipes). In my job I look at environmental exposures to chemicals and the human health effects that may be related. It makes sense to limit exposures to chemicals, but many of us are not aware of what food or household products contain these materials. It...

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong-Headed Information: Pregnant Women Need Animal Protein!
While I think it's vitally important for pregnancy women to avoid chemicals and toxins and eat organic foods, there is a lot of wrong-headed information in this book. It's crucial for pregnant to get the proper complete protein and fats for their growing child that can only be provided through animal protein. For example, a pregnant woman and her baby must have iron...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide that makes you WANT to eat healthy!, April 17, 2009
This review is from: The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet (Paperback)
It is interesting to realize how you can easily make a few modifications to what you regularly eat to help out your health and the health of our planet. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or planning on being pregnant in the near future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Moms-To-Be, April 27, 2009
This review is from: The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet (Paperback)
Ms. McLean has written a book about diet during pregnancy, but this cookbook should stay on your kitchen shelf even after the baby is born. These are healthy and easy-to-prepare recipes that even self-proclaimed non-cooks can make anytime. --Janine Gleason

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal resource for moms to get the real dirt on how to have a green pregnancy, April 9, 2009
This review is from: The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet (Paperback)
The market is crowded with books purporting to be the authoritative guide for pregnant women attempting to maintain a green lifestyle while caring for the baby to be, but most such books are not much more than product endorsements. I found this book to be especially helpful because I am hoping to be a mommy in the near future and as a prospective mother to be, I've been searching for an unbiased objective guide through the increasingly crowded aisles of the green produce and household products sections in the grocery store.

Most importantly, the author never patronizes the reader, as so many of the green authors are apt to do. Her advice is simply frank and her recipes are yummy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed Guidance!, April 14, 2009
This review is from: The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet (Paperback)
I have always been someone who needed a manual for getting through this life in the healthiest way I can and
I've often referred to various books for certain needs. I can tell you that I will definitely use Ms. McLean's book
as a reference for healthier eating as I attempt pregnancy, during it AND after due to her well-researched,
no-nonsense approach to her writing. Also, I had been considering lowering my meat intake and with the knowledge
she instilled in me, I feel confident that it's not only a good idea for me and my future baby but GREAT for our
environment as well.

I am greatful Ms. McLean wrote "The Green Pregnancy Diet" book and shall refer back to it often!

Sincerely,

Heather Lukens

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong-Headed Information: Pregnant Women Need Animal Protein!, July 2, 2009
This review is from: The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet (Paperback)
While I think it's vitally important for pregnancy women to avoid chemicals and toxins and eat organic foods, there is a lot of wrong-headed information in this book. It's crucial for pregnant to get the proper complete protein and fats for their growing child that can only be provided through animal protein. For example, a pregnant woman and her baby must have iron. Low maternal iron levels and anemia are linked to poor placental growth, low birth weight, and premature birth. Lack of iron causes fetal growth problems as this metal carries oxygen from the lungs to every cell in the body. The best source of readily available and absorbable iron is red meat. Iron pills are poorly absorbed and it's unclear that they support a healthy birth weight the same way that iron from red meat does. The author once again repeats the usual arguments about the environmental damage of factory farming and grain usage. And yes that is true and should be avoided at all costs. However, the answer is not necessarily to avoid animal protein. More than ever, there are many small family farmers offering high quality, pasture raised and grass fed animals (cows are not meant to be eating grain so once they are on their natural diet of grass you don't have any of the problems of factory farming). For anyone looking for an excellent, well-researched book on a healthy pregnancy, please read Nina Planck's "Real Food for Mother and Child: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two and Baby's First Foods."
