"I read - and write - health books and am especially a huge fan of greens, whole foods, raw foods, green juices and of course, green smoothies. I've read a ton of books - by a ton, I mean at least 20! This book is the best. It is visually gorgeous. It is written with the most friendly yet humbling and informative writing voice, it covers everything you may want to know about green smoothies as a beginner and also directs you to the right sections if you are in a hurry to get to the recipes. The author also have very smart and innovative ideas about what to do with your smoothies, how to measure correctly, how to simplify this whole process and she is NOT dogmatic - THANK YOU for sparing us that, Gabrielle - but she is thoroughly convincing and credible. I LOVE this book. Highly recommend it and of course, most of all, get your green smoothie on if you aren't already, book or no book! Got it? :) Good!

PS: Hope this review helped you decide!"

By Farnoosh Brock (USA) Amazon Vine reviewer!

Hi, I am Gabrielle Raiz and I have taste-tested and refined every single one of the (more than) 132 green smoothie recipes that you will find in this healthy eating cookbook.

I know how hard weight loss can be. I also know how hard it can be to get all those greens, vegetables, fruit and healthy raw food into our children. So whether you want to lose weight or just simply be as healthy as you can be then Green Smoothie Magic has the power to change your health, your nutrition, your life and also those of the people around you.

All the recipes were tried out by many other people. Many of them were scored out of 10 by my (then) 9 year old daughter. This is a great way to locate kid-friendly smoothies.

I give you advice on how to make any smoothie tasty for children (and adults too!), tips about washing and storing greens, blending and even some blender models and brands to look for that start at under $50.

You don't have to be vegetarian or vegan to benefit from green smoothies. Nor do you have to be focused on weight loss to enjoy the health benefits. Me? I love green smoothies. I love that they are SO quick and easy to make. But more than that, I LOVE the way they make me feel. Healthy. Vibrant. Light on my system yet fulfilling and deliciously satisfying.

But that's enough about me (hehe). What you will discover in Green Smoothie Magic is this:
  • 132 tested green smoothie recipes (plus suggested variations)
  • How to adapt and substitute ingredients depending on availability and taste
  • How to easily introduce green smoothies to your family (without the taste or color 'shock')
  • How to add superfoods to smoothies (not essential, just a bonus - and great for raw vegans!)
  • The best ways to wash and store ingredients
  • Blending and blender recommendations (starting at under $50)
  • 196+ pages of practical information

About the Author

Gabrielle Raiz is an author, a keen foodie and health-loving educator who perhaps surprisingly started her working life as a dentist. She has a knack for making things practical and understandable and has a flexible approach to her food and her yoga.

Gabrielle has recently expanded her food writing to publish 2 top selling books "Green Smoothie Magic" and "132+ Delicious Salads, Dressings and Dips". All of her recipes are fuss-free adaptable recipes which most importantly use easy to find ingredients that anyone can make. Some embody beautiful simplicity of 1 or 2 ingredients while others are marvellously complex, but never hard to make!

Gabrielle's talent as an author was crystallized through much online writing and of course with the publishing of her highly successful first book: "Hot Yoga MasterClass" (which is now finally, recently available on Amazon).

Her hallmark style has an easy, intelligent and conversational tone with a touch of humor!

In both her currently chosen fields (!) of nutrition and yoga she has built a solid reputation for creating products of beauty and above all, quality. "What you eat and how you move are 2 fields in which being mindful and present are vital", Gabrielle says. "I love that I help people do both!"

As the "Hot Yoga Doctor" she helps tens of thousands of people every month in every corner of the planet improve their yoga practices by demystifying all things yoga, hot yoga and Bikram Yoga™.

Something you may not know about Gabrielle (and rather unusual for a yoga instructor) is that she used to race motorcycles! But as she's been known to say "the last time I rode a motorbike was to go and buy a pregnancy testing kit". Her daughter is now 10!

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for making your own green smoothies September 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
FULL DISCLOSURE: I know Gabrielle from attending her hot yoga teacher training program in 2011 and assisting in 2012. During which time she drank a green (or often red) smoothie every morning of the >60 days I've spent living alongside her - so she definitely knows her smoothies.

I also have to confess that my previous experience with green smoothies has not been fantastic. I have purchased other green smoothie books that promised a variety of magical health recoveries. Whilst I don't doubt the authors were sincere in their recommendations and I really wanted to incorporate them into my diet, the recipes left little to be desired by way of taste with no indication as to what went wrong. So I was greatly pleased to discover that Gabrielle devotes over a third of the book to background information that is highly practical, which will allow you to get the most out of the recipes. There is a lot of information in the book including advice for storing your greens, superfoods to add, how to freeze fruit, and even suggestions for choosing a blender. In particular, I thought the following sections were especially helpful.

HOW MUCH OF MY SMOOTHIE SHOULD BE GREEN? and HANDFUL, BUNCHES OR CUPS -
In these sections, Gabrielle discusses the ratio and measurement of greens, which is something that tends to get glossed over in other books and therefore when you go to make the smoothies you won't be left mystified as to how much to actually put in of the various ingredients.

NOT ALL GREEN SMOOTHIES ARE GREEN and KNOWING YOUR GREENS -
In these sections, Gabrielle lists a variety of greens and other ingredients that you can add and gives you an indication as to how varying these will impact on the flavour and texture of your smoothie.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Chew Your Drink And Drink Your Food" Gandhi September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've spent thousands of dollars on raw food related trainings and education over the past year. I read Green Smoothie Magic and felt like someone condensed and summarized the content in each of my formal trainings in one book, in very simple, "family friendly", easy to understand language for only $2.99. That's absurd. This book is worth 10 times that price! While reading the book, I felt like I was being taken on a personal journey into the "lifestyle" of an experienced, vegetarian, vegan, raw foodie who figured out how to get her child to eat more greens by drinking "green smoothies" long before drinking green smoothies became the most popular, healthiest way to lose weight, feel great and maintain great health. Gabrielle doesn't miss anything on Smoothies, Raw Food, Greens or anything in between! From her heart and YEARS of experience she shares the CLEANEST, most up-to-date, not internet regurgitated health information available. As a Raw Food Chef/Educator I teach classes on the benefits of Green Smoothies and how to incorporate them into your daily life. Going forward I will purchase copies of Green Smoothie Magic for my students because the recipes it contains are reliable, DELICIOUS and very EASY TO MAKE! This is a must if you want to make Smoothie-ing a lifestyle and my success as a teacher depends on this outcome for my students. Thank you for this book Gabrielle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Visions of Sugar-Bombs Danced in my Head April 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been making green smoothies for several years, incorporating a variety of mostly green veggies and a smaller portion of fruit, seeds and nuts. I bought this book (Kindle version), based on the positive reviews, to see if I could improve on the variety of my smoothies. Despite the author's assertion that her smoothie recipes could be meal replacements, the recipes are mostly fructose laden super sweet creations that would be a nutritional disaster for most people, if consumed as a meal, or more frequently than one would consume a sugar laden large Coke. First, fructose is a sugar that aggressively raises blood sugar and causes a responding insulin response. Even non-diabetics who are trying to control their weight might find that they need to use fruit in moderation. Take the example of the Berrylicious recipe in this book. The 2 bananas and 2 cups of berries provide a whopping 102g of carbs, with 60g being SUGAR, which is more sugar than a 21 oz. coke. Yes, there are more nutrients and fiber, but fructose causes larger glycemic than table sugar, which is half fructose/glucose. With only 8g of Protein, this is NOT a meal replacement. In addition to maintaining and repairing muscle, protein tempers insulin response and provides satiety. I would imagine that one of these smoothies for breakfast would cause hunger pangs in an hour or so, when the blood sugar crashes. Most of the other smoothie recipes have even less protein. Other recipes add in high glycemic items like dried dates, apricots and raisins in quantity. Some add in some agave nectar for even more fructose. I will incorporate one or two ideas from the book, such as using more herbs like mint, parsley and cilantro, but for the most part, this book contained little useful information for me. Read more ›

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing so far, but hopeful May 30, 2013
By Troy D.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Based on the excellent reviews, I went ahead and ordered this book. I had been getting rather tired of my daily recipe for smoothies, and was excited to try something new. Out of six recipes I tried from this book so far, 4 were rather disappointing-one went down the drain. I discovered I can't tolerate arugula at all! Yuck, nastiest tasting stuff I've ever tried. I can say that when I juice, I'm able to tolerate a lot more greens, and never worry too much about stems, etc, but blending is a whole different world.

On the positive note, most of the ingredients are pretty easy to find at your local supermarket. One just needs to experiment, and there are certainly plenty of recipes to experiment with. I find many times the simpler the the ingredients, the better tasting the final blend. Once you start mixing together 3, 4 or 5 ingredients, you can really get some unusual tastes. Admittedly, the author has a tough job as no two pieces of fruit are exactly the same. Get something that's a little more ripe or a little more green, and you got completely different taste. I remember trying some baby kale, that is supposedly sweeter, and it was some of the most horrible tasting stuff I've ever purchased.

I would caution anyone to be particularly careful with strong greens, arugula, mustard greens, etc. are extremely bitter, and can turn an otherwise good smoothie into a disaster. Still other vegetables like beets can be hard to stomach too. I'd say take a bite of the green before putting it in the blender.

I think there's probably a pretty good reason that most of the smoothies in this book use "mild" greens, which means a lot of spinach, and things like romaine lettuce or chard, although dinosaur kale is a favorite of mine. Careful with stems, as they are really bitter.
