“Ways to make your house more green Being green can be a challenge ...” “Green up your Clean” by Jill Potvin Schoff helps with more day-to-day issues.”

DAILY HERALD
August 2008

“Parents of young children, pet owners and those just conscious of what they put into their bodies or homes may be interested in creating their own cleaning products. You can also save money by making your own products, and since many of the ingredients may already be in your kitchen cabinet, you may also save a trip to the store. There are numerous books on the market that cover environmentally friendly and healthier cleaning techniques. “...good one is "Green Up Your Cleanup" by Jill Potvin Schoff ...”

FAYETTEVILLE MORNING NEWS
August 2008

Product Description
Green Up Your Cleanup is a timely handbook of advice and cleanser "recipes" that explains how to eliminate toxic-chemical household cleaning agents from your life and replace them with natural, and often homemade solutions. Inspired by the author's experience as a mother of an allergic child, the book includes anecdotal information that led her to natural cleaning solutions and has "green facts," "smart tips," and informational sidebars generously sprinkled throughout the text.

The book is divided into three parts, "The Basics," "Inside Jobs," and "Dirty Jobs," and covers everything from green-cleaning the kitchen to green-cleaning the car. A handy size and a spiral binding make it easy to keep on hand as a reference as you do the chores.

2.0 out of 5 stars One good recipe... and many not so good, September 6, 2008
I bought this book with high expectations and tried almost all the recipes. The floor cleaner left my floor sticky and needed additional mopping to remove the "natural" cleaner, the washing machine detergent recipe was so potent it removed dies from dark clothing (i.e. all my husband's office attire), and the automatic dish-washing recipe left a nasty brown film over all my dishes, especially the plastics. Also, the vinegar rinse, and ensuing stench, required to sanitize the bathroom was not a big hit with my family. However, as a previous reviewer noted, the baking soda scrub recipe is very useful and a great way to cut down on cleaning fumes and costs. My recommendation is not to purchase this book but perform an on-line search for better cleaning recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Easy Guide for going Green., March 13, 2008

I have a number of very good books on every aspect of green, however, this is the book I was going to write. Thanks to Jill, I don't have to bother. This book is excellent in every way. Well researched and written in a very easy to understand way. I love that she explains the dangers of chemicals and toxins and gives great alternatives to them. I talk to groups about going green and recommend books for people to buy. This book will be added to my list. I highly recommend this book, it has all the information you need to start changing your environment for the sake of yourself, your family and the planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, April 28, 2008
By Jennifer (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
I came across this book the other day and it is the most useful book I've bought in a very long time. For the past several months I've been researching homemade detergents on the internet, but it's hard to tell what really works, what's really "green," and what I should try. Many of the laundry detergent recipes include "Fels Naptha"--I found a bar at the grocery store and it had a strong artificial smell, but no list of ingredients. I never tried it. After purchasing this book, I tried several of the basic cleaning recipes and they work just as well, or even better, that commercial products I've been using. I tried the baking soda/castile soap recipe on my bathtub yesterday and managed to get out a stubborn stain that even a bleach product didn't remove. I've now completely switched to Jill's recipes for all of my cleaning supplies, and not only do I feel great about using green products, but I'm going to save a ton of money every year on laundry and dishwashing detergents. Anyone looking to green up their home or to save money should get this book.
