Book Description

April 30, 2002
Green wood from a newly felled tree is easy to cut, bend, and shape. That is why working with green wood remains a time-honored rural craft for producing rustic-style furniture and other outdoor fixtures. Though there are many carpentry books on the market, few among them focus on this increasingly popular subject. Alan and Gill Bridgewater's brand new title is precisely what green wood carpenters have been looking for. Following a comprehensive introductory section on tools, techniques, and types of wood, the authors present 15 easy-to-follow projects that will result in attractive and useful objects made of green wood. They include a trellis, a garden bench, a rustic slab wood gate, and a backyard pergola, to cite just a few. Directions for all projects are heavily illustrated, and range from "easy" to "ambitious." Many can be completed within a single weekend. Large full-color photos of all finished pieces show do-it-yourselfers what their projects will look like when completed. There are 110 full-color photos in total, plus 60 instructive illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Most modern woodworkers shun green wood, preferring seasoned, milled lumber. But this was not always the case; many traditional crafters used freshly cut wood. The prolific Bridgewaters here offer a collection of 15 projects using such wood. These projects vary in complexity, with a birdhouse, trellis, or planter at one end of the spectrum and a chair, bridge, or gazebo-like structure at the other. The rustic woodwork shown here requires only the simplest tools and joinery, which are covered nicely in a short introductory section. The projects are attractive, with well-written instructions, and in many cases design variations are provided to personalize the projects. This title should be part of comprehensive woodworking collections.

After reading and building some of the projects in Brian Cameron's book on making bent willow furniture the "15 Easy Weekend Projects Using Freshly Cut Wood" looks like a keeper. I'm really looking forward to getting out to the lake and cutting some more willow!

I had checked this book out from my local public library - the patterns / projects were so good, I wanted a copy to by to use. I especially like the pattern for the gazebo; I'll build this later this year.
