Fast, Easy Trimming and Edging
With the 21602 String Trimmer, yard work is easier and more efficient. This user-friendly tool transitions from trimming to edging with one push of the "Rotate to Edge" button, so it's a snap to shift back and forth from trimming to edging along curbs and driveways.

User-Friendly Features
To save you time, an auto line advancement system replenishes worn line as needed. And thanks to the telescoping shaft, which adjusts to accommodate your height, you won't have to strain to trim or edge.

At just 7.5 pounds, the 21602 is also easy to handle and hold, making it a great choice for all-day jobs.
No Carbon Footprint
No Emissions--Ever
Like all Greenworks lawn products, the 21602 will never release an ounce of carbon emissions into the air. And because it's powered by a lithium-ion battery, this pole saw won't create the mess and potential danger of gasoline spills. This design is also efficient--you'll never have to haul your gas can to the filling station or schedule tune ups and maintenance.

The Lithium-Ion Advantage
The 21602 can be powered by a 6.0-Ah lithium-ion battery (included) or a 2.6-Ah lithium-ion battery (a light-weight option--not included). The included battery is compatible with all Greenworks lithium-ion products, and it provides up to 45 minutes of use per charge--up to three times longer runtime than comparable nickel-cadmium batteries and up to 2,000 cycles. This long-lasting battery also maintains consistent power, so you won't be disturbed by power lapses or surges. And because lithium-ion batteries are recyclable and are manufactured without heavy metals.
Energy Star
Charger Reduces Energy Usage by 35 Percent
Thanks to the wall-mountable charger, the 21602's battery charges to full power in 4.5 hours. Best of all, the charger is Energy Star rated, which means it has been shown by the EPA to reduce energy usage by an average of 35 percent from conventional yard tools. Plus, you can charge the battery any time without any negative memory effect.
4 YR Warranty
Warranty Information
The 21602 is backed by a four-year warranty--that's double the industry standard. Additionally, the battery carries a one-year warranty against defects in workmanship and materials.

I wanted to replace my Homelite 14" dual-line string trimmer as I finally had enough of the noise, pollution, starting issues, mixing/storing of gas & oil, engine maintenance, and the constant need (and effort) to replace the pre-cut line strips.

Cordless is the way to go. However, given the current limitations of battery technology, I was concerned about finding a string trimmer that had the necessary balance of power, run time, weight, and charge time. I also wanted a reliable unit that would give me years of trouble-free service.

I did my usual due-diligence, and spent hours reading reviews and handling a few units at the local hardware stores. I work in the computer/electronics field, so I am very familiar with battery technology and the other parts of a string trimmer. I knew I wanted Lithium Ion batteries with >30 minutes run time. I was also more interested in the highest AH (Amp Hour) rating than Volts (e.g., 18V, 20V, 36V, etc). Marketing is pushing the voltage rating (largely because the lower-cost Ni-cad batteries have a lower Amp-Hour rating in comparison to Lithium Ion batteries of the same weight). However, voltage is a poor indicator of how powerful and long the trimmer will run. For example; both a tiny hearing-aid battery and D-size flashlight battery have the same voltage rating (1.5V), however the D-size battery has a much higher Amp-Hour rating. If you replaced the D cell in a flash light with the tiny hearing-aid battery, the light would barely be visible and would drain the battery in less than a minute. Whereas the D cell would light the lamp at full brightness for over 30 minutes. Same basic principle applies to a trimmer. Choices as of now (2010) for Li-Ion batteries range from 1.3 Ah to 6.0 Ah. 6 Ah is a huge amount of capacity! 1.

I was waiting to see whether anyone reviewed this new trimmer before buying it, but decided I couldn't wait any longer and took the plunge. It replaced a terrible corded trimmer that I had to take apart every few minutes to fix the string. The Greenworks with Lithium Ion battery works beautifully. The battery was still at fairly high capacity after about 45 minutes of trimming. Out of the box, the trimmer makes a good impression. It's solidly built. The instruction manual isn't very good (lots of repetition in the safety warnings and poorly written assembly instructions), but assembly and operation were easy to figure out anyway. I was concerned that the trimmer would feel heavy with the battery attached, but that wasn't a problem at all. Switching from trimming to edging is a snap. I love the automatic advancement of the string (especially after my old nightmare of a trimmer). The manual warns the user to keep an eye on the string after turning off to make sure that it hasn't receded too far, but so far that hasn't been a problem. I was worried that the trimmer wouldn't seem very powerful, but it had plenty of power for my needs. I have a large garden with a lot of edges to trim. No problem with the Greenworks!

Four months later (August 2010) and I still love it. I just ran out of the string on the first spool. Changing it was easy. I dropped the battery on the hard pavement and was worried I had ruined it, but there seems to be no problem--I just spent 45 minutes edging my garden and the battery still works great. I also bought the blower that uses the same battery--another great purchase!

May 2013. -- it is still working fine. I recently had a problem because I lost the screw that holds the guard on, but the company sent me another one at no charge.

I unpacked and assembled the weed trimmer the same day it arrived. Easily done. During the first and only time I was able to use it, the weed trimmer began to smoke in less than 20 minutes of use. I let it cool off and tried again. It wouldn't run more than about 10 seconds so I gave up.

The manual says not to use the machine if it smokes. The manual has only a phone number to use to contact Greenworks. There is no mailing address, fax number or email address. I called the Greenworks number to talk about the warranty. After a 12 minute hold, I told a person about the problem. I was told that someone would call me within an hour for a "resolution." After two days without a call from Greenworks, I called again. This time I was on hold for 15 minutes when I gave up. I never heard from Greenworks after my first call. I then used the order confirmation email from Amazon to contact Amazon by email about the problem. That same day Amazon sent a new weed trimmer by overnight mail, even though I only paid for the lowest cost delivery on the original order. Amazon gave me about 30 days to return the old weed trimmer or I would have been charged for the replacement weed trimmer. My conclusion is that the warranty by Greenworks is worthless but Amazon stands behind the product.

I haven't had any problem with the replacement weed trimmer. It has almost as much power as a gas trimmer, as other reviewers said. I used it on thick grass under my wrought iron fence where the grass was about 10 inches high. It worked well. So far, I used it about an hour and still had about 25% charge remaining in the battery. The second time I used it there was 50% charge remaining after about 45 minutes. I am pleased with its performance.
