When it comes to concise and easy to use price guides to Lionel Trains I have always found Greenberg's Guides to be invaluable. It breaks the catalogue numbers down into eras or distinct ranges of years of production and lists price ranges based on condition in a very orderly fashion. If you sell or buy on eBay this is a valuable tool. Greenberg's Lionel Trains Guides and publications are all first rate and come highly recommended.

If you purchased a train set already you may not want to see what it shows as the value of your set! If you are considering buying an individual item or a whole set this is a must have book so that you don't pay too much. The guide typically lists two prices, Good & Excellent for the older items and Excellent & New for things that are more recent or still being made. There are 317 pages and the guide is divided into sections and there is markings on the edge to quickly go to a particular section. The first 3 sections are the main part of the guide, Section 1: Preware 1901-1942 begins on page 23, Section 2: Postwar 1945-1969 begins on page 58, and Section 3: Modern Era 1970-2008 begins on page 93 and ends on page 293. There are not any pictures, just the basic information about an item which will be listed with the following information: Number, Description Condition Good Excellent (price) Cond/$, for example "18131 NP F-3 AB Set, "2390A", "2390C", 97 295 360 _____"; this was an entry taken from page 192. The 295 in the line was the Good price and the 360 was for the Excellent. The 18131 is the Catalog Number. The guide has nearly 3 pages of abbreviation descriptions, that you will need to become familiar with them to understand the Description field.
