Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The last comprehensive history of Greene County, which borders on the Hudson River in the Catskills of upstate New York, appeared in 1884. The author of this new history is a curator of collections at the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs and a native of the area. Not exactly chronological, his history is divided into 47 topical chapters, such as "Land," "Schools," "Emigration," etc. Although not labeled as such, there are three broad sections: prehistory and Colonial, 19th century, and 20th century. Though individual chapters aren't comprehensive, which would require a much lengthier book, each chapter hits the highlights of its topic. The lack of consistent chronology is somewhat confusing but detracts little from the overall work. There are many photographs, but the book could use a good map. The reader gets a feel for Greene County, its towns, people, and history. This work will be of local interest and a worthy addition to regional county collections.

Review

"... is a font of knowledge and lively chronicler of folklore. The enchanting full-color cover ... is worth the price of the book." -- Albany Times Union: June, 1994
