Book Description

April 13, 2011
In The Greener Forest anything is possible. Silver maples sing in angel-song. Spriggans skulk about cypress knees and wreak havoc at an amusement park. The Applehead Lady's true identity is revealed by moonlight filtering through the branches of an ancient tree. A scarecrow finds true love in an ash grove. And a wayward beech tree root sends a woman into the arms of a kindhearted giant. These stories and more lead the reader into the depths of The Greener Forest, where Faerie and the everyday world collide. There is dark and light, evil and good, and uncertain dusky gray lurking between the pages of this book. Discover that all is not what it seems at first glance and wondrous things still happen in The Greener Forest.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Greener Forest, February 16, 2012
This review is from: The Greener Forest (Paperback)
Vonnie Winslow Crist paints stories with a vividly imaginative palette. Suddenly the orninary becomes magical and anything can happen in a quiet garden shop, a city zoo, or to an innocent scarecrow minding his own business in a vegetable garden. The Greener Forest is a treasure-trove of creative wonderment. I'm enjoying the stories over and over again and looking forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greener Forest, February 7, 2012

If you enjoy well written and beautifully illustrated works - you can not go wrong with this gem. I gave this as a gift to my mother, and it 'lives' by her bedside - her all time favorite book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome respite, February 6, 2012
This review is from: The Greener Forest (Paperback)
This book contains the best sort of fantasy writing--stories that transport you to alternative versions of "reality" while making you ponder the harshness of everyday human existence and human nature. The stories are plot driven and entertaining but also contain subtly thought-provoking themes and ideas that stay with you after the book is set aside. I received this book as a gift, and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I thought it would be nice as a night table reader since I could read one or two stories each night before bed without getting pulled into the extensive plot of a novel; however, I read most of the book in one sitting late into the night (couldn't stop!). It was so fun to be pulled into the many imaginative universes created for the various tales. My favorite stories were "Shoreside," "Scarecrow," and the gruesome "Garden Shop," but I honestly thoroughly enjoyed each story and poem. The quality of the writing matches the imagination of the writer, which I appreciate very much after all of the poorly written science fiction and fantasy I have encountered in the past few years. My only complaint: I wish the book were longer!
