Review

"Bill Murphy's book saved our farm and changed our life! It made it possible for our son to come back home to the farm, which now that it is based on pasture will support two families, rather than going bankrupt as we were when we fed in confinement. " -- Henry Forgues, Vermont dairy farmer

From the Publisher

For nearly 20 years, Bill Murphy has been a leader in North America helping farmers to use the pasture resource to its fullest potential in cutting production costs. As many successful pasture-based farmers know, there is no cheaper way to feed livestock than on pasture and this book explains how to do it!

I'm reading this book for the third time - there's just too much info to digest in one reading. We are just starting with cattle and are using this book as our bible. It not only explains the many advantages of raising animals using managment intensive grazing (more profit, environmentally friendly, humane, better nutrition, ease of animal handling), it goes into great detail on HOW to do it. My husband used the chapter on fencing to select products that have received many positive comments from visitors to the farm. I especially enjoyed reading about pasture plant diversity and how cattle "harvest" it. Our cattle look (and taste) great, much to the shock of long-time cattle farmers in our community who are surprised that two greenhorns like us can do so well. We attribute our success to this book and highly recommend it.

If you're willing to delve into the nitty gritty, this book is the best possible primer for rotational grazing. It focuses on cattle, but once you understand how to manage rotational pastures, you can tweak the methods to suit other kinds of livestock.

This is a really good overview if you are interested in pasture based livestock farming. With a lot of interesting facts about pasture ecology and euqlly fascinating detials about livestock production on pasture, I think Mr Murphy has put together a good book for livestock producers to use to become acquainted with pasture-based farming.

I am a small scale sheep rancher (less than 120 breed ewes). Much of this book is geared towards cattle. Sheep are covered and the practice of rotational grazing and pasture building seem to be somewhat universal in approach and scope when it comes to all ruminates or grazing livestock. I was anxious to receive this book as some think of Voisin as one of the forefathers of management intensive grazing. I was not disappointed as the books information exceeded my expectations. The information on cover crops for pasture was a welcome surprise to mention one. Regardless, after reading the book over the course of three nights; I realized this would be a go to reference book and therein lies the rub. I doubt this copy will hold together for another two readings, much less a weekly or so thumbing to confirm implemented pasture practices. The paperback edition (4th printing) arrived in a bubble protected paper envelope. This is the first of over 60 books purchased from Amazon that did not arrive in a box. The covers were somewhat curled when I unpacked the book. I thought about sending it back based on condition, but I could not resist starting the read. After the three night read in my climate controlled home the clear outer wrapper of the cover seems to be separating from the color underlay and several of the pages are coming loose from the glue binder. I love all my books paper or not and as such, treat them well regardless of construction. I don't own a Kindle, but this books publisher needs to think about making in available for Kindle or upgrading their printing process. I have seen art books in paper for half the price of this book constructed ten times better. Pitiful.Read more ›

An excellent book that met all of my expectations. This book is well researched and readable. I wish that more people would read and study it--especially anyone who is in a position to influence policy--either on a small scale of a large scale.

This book is very well written. If you are interested in pasture management this is a good reference. It is best if you have cattle but, lots of the information is basic to land and helpful. Very well laid out and researched.

A great read, this is not just science, in the sense of measuring and recording the data, but in drawing intelligent conclusions from thoughtful observation: increase the production of the land, make it healthier for the animals, use less chemicals and make more money. More of a change in how the farmer thinks about agriculture than the subtle changes in timing and layout on the farm. It is intuitive and inventive: the finding of solutions that are practical and simple, produce astonishing results and make life better. It is what we used to mean by 'science'

The reason such results astonish us is that we humans tend to stick with what works, out of habit, even if it doesn't work very well. If all the billions of dollars and thousands of researchers being paid to spend their days creating libraries of information in support of climate change were to take more strolls - or even go for a jog without the iPod plugged in - we might come up with some real solutions, rather than environmentalist homilies and political diktats that usually involve, one way or another, sending our hard-earned money to someone else. Often enough, not surprisingly, to increase the budget or bottom line of those making the 'recommendations'

There is a word for solutions that are easily understood, once somebody points it out to us, and which produce tremendous results: elegant. Greener Pastures on Your Side of the Fence is elegant. We need more elegance in this world: read it.
