Great! Well worth your time to read this one!,

This review is from: Greenhorns and Killer Mountains (Paperback)
Jim Conover's middle name could be Adventure. The Pekin man is a retired cop, a partner in a private detective agency, and a treasure hunter. In other words, adventure does not have to bite Conover on the butt for him to recognize it. Conover proves convincingly he knows adventure intimately in the pages of his second book, a freshman fiction effort, Greenhorns and Killer Mountains. The book, set in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona, is a page-turner worthy of the time it takes to cover its 429 pages. It's a fun, modern American Western romp. Conover's strength in this volume is weaving adventure with character development. The characters come to life quickly and are developed in such a way that the reader can identify with them. The adventure at times seems a bit overblown, but, once into the book, you won't care. The pace is so fast there is hardly time to consider whether the scenario before you is completely feasible. This book is about total escapism within characters that everyday men and women can identify with. The folks in this book are what they seem, and, at the same time, more complex than they appear early on as the book progresses.

Once I began this book, I couldn't put it down! The story is fast paced, exciting and realistic. The plots and sub-plots are well written and when everything pulls together, you feel a part of the tension and excitement! The characters were carefully constructed and very believable. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy high adventure, mystery, humor and real people in their novels!!

Look out Jim Conover is on the scene! This book is fantastic. I absolutely loved. It's a great treasure hunting adventure with characters so colorful you know every one. I couldn't put the book down and when I did I felt like I had stepped out of a movie theatre, not put a book down.If you don't read another book this year, read this one, get to know Clay Morgan and Big Alice and feel as though you've been to the Superstition Mts. in Arizona. This book holds your interest cover to cover. Can't wait for his next book..

I LOVED IT,

I read Jim's first book, Lynch Law. I found it very interesting especially since I have lived in Tazewell County most of my life. I was at the book signing at Pekin Public Library and was very impressed by the number of people who were there for it. When Jim's next book Greenhorns and Killer Mountains came out I was first in line for it. I'm a fiction reader by heart but with this novel I wasn't sure if I was reading a fiction or a non-fiction story. Jim brought so many emotions and adventures to life and let me picture the scenery so vividly at times I could have actually been watching the movie instead of reading the book. It was so real and exciting I found myself telling them greenhorns what to do and not to do and holding my breath, afraid of the outcome in several places. This is truly a book you will want on your bookshelf because you "will" want to read it again. Unlike so many of the new novels today, it took you places and shared so many feelings with you that it leaves you wanting to go back. For a first novel Jim has proved to be a promising new author with a style that today's readers are hungry for, to be able to escape into reality and share adventures that could be a possibility for us all. A NOTE TO THE AUTHOR......... Please write more books. I think you defiantly have a style of writing that will put you on the best sellers list. I'll be watching for your next one.Good Luck, Betty

This is one of those books that you just can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens next. You forget you're reading a book! You feel like it's really happening because Conover's writing puts you right there! Sometimes, even good books have their "slow parts," but not this one! Anyone who likes books that really take you there and is written in such a way that you can truly "see" what's happening will not want to miss this one!

I don't usually read Western or Adventure novels, but this one is fantastic. I neglected some chores and rushed through others to get back to it, and stayed awake past my bedtime reading. Don't be intimidated by the number of pages. The font and short chapters allow you to zip along. It's one of those you'll never forget.

As a former resident of Pekin, Illinois, I first heard about Jim Conover's books from a webpage showing different events in our hometown, including a book signing for his books. I decided to read his first book because he was from my hometown. Was I in for a pleasant surprise--it was great! I couldn't wait to read his next book! Normally, I prefer non-fiction books, so when I read that Greenhorns was fiction, I wasn't particularly excited about reading it. Was I in for a shock! After starting the book, I could literally not put it down. What intrigued me the most was the number of characters used and how Mr. Conover was able to weave them throughout the plot and subplots to exciting conclusion. I highly recommend this author and look forward to future books!

While I was reading, I could picture each individual and their surroundings as if I was standing right next to them. The adventure that this author took me on was incredible. From laughs to fears with each turn of the page. I would love to see this in a motion picture. As a matter of fact, I can even picture which well known actors and actresses should play each character. I highly recommend this book. Make sure when you start to read it that you have plenty of time to finish it. You won't want to put it down.
