3.0 out of 5 stars Legacy Rap Trend Nearly Ruins Fresh Approach to Genre, April 12, 2009
This review is from: The Greenhouse Effect Aka the Greatest Mixtape Ever (Audio CD)
Asher Roth is a breath of fresh air for those of us who grew up in the burbs listening to early N.W.A., Ice-T, Slick Rick, Too Short, etc. what I like to call classic or good rap. Somewhere along the way rap forgot that it was music and music is suppose to be rhythmic and preferably melodic.

Asher Roth challenges much of what rap has become both stylistically and explicitly in his lyrics. Unfortunately, many of the songs on this album are littered with some Flavor Flav reminiscent bozo plugging his web site and reminding the audience what the title of the album they are listening to is. Sad that the producer of this album didn't realize that Roth's new take on the genre is evolutionary and the archaic practice shoehorning in some clown makes the experience more Neanderthal than Homo sapien.

Let's hope Roth's much anticipated "Asleep In The Bread Isle," cleverly scheduled for release on 4/20, focuses on the core value, Roth himself, and ignores the hanger-ons trying to make a name for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars this album is free, April 22, 2011
This review is from: The Greenhouse Effect Aka the Greatest Mixtape Ever (Audio CD)

This album is free. I think you can get it from a bunch of mix tape sites on the internet. I can't believe this is even legal to sell since even the artists themselves don't sell it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From A Professional Standpoint..., April 19, 2010

This review is from: The Greenhouse Effect Aka the Greatest Mixtape Ever (Audio CD)
I am a underground newspaper writer in SC and I cover Hip Hop because of my history with it and my industry connections. I will be honest, When I first saw Asher I thought it was a train wreck waiting to happen and changed the channel. I was browsing through mix tapes one day and I came across this one. Once I saw the list of colabs and producers i figured it was worth a listen. I was AMAZED with this kids talent! His delivery is on time, he isn't bragging and boasting and the production is nothing less than perfect. So what, He's a skinny white kid from the burbs but he can flow and that's real talk! Asleep in The Bread Isle was way under-rated and is good the whole way through. He separates himself from most rappers by being himself and for that he gets 5 stars. To sum it up, his flow is dope, His lyrics have substance and he isn't afraid to be himself. Em is talking about putting him on so there could be a future there and that I look forward too!
