5.0 out of 5 stars the little guys
Yes these are the little guys of progressive compared to the huge success of people like Genisis, E,L & P and YES. Greenslade like Camel, Fruupp, Caravan and Gentle Giant were the second tier. Even though Greenslade had a pedigree line-up Tony Reeves,Dave Greenslde & Andy McCollugh, and the very unique voice of Dave Lawson none of their albums were released stateside...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth mining
3 1/2

Little known progressive act delivers a surprisingly adept and personal entry amidst the flooding of early 70's output. Abandoning most traditional guitar based rock values for grander keyboards and operatic-y vocals should have fans of Gentle Giant to 90 Day Men intrigued. Though minor missteps overwhelm the album as a whole, the sound and approach...

Yes these are the little guys of progressive compared to the huge success of people like Genisis, E,L & P and YES. Greenslade like Camel, Fruupp, Caravan and Gentle Giant were the second tier. Even though Greenslade had a pedigree line-up Tony Reeves,Dave Greenslde & Andy McCollugh, and the very unique voice of Dave Lawson none of their albums were released stateside except the 4th album "Time and Tide" came out on Mercury but they were soon dropped, and the only US tour ever was cancelled. This first album shows every thing thats great about them, super tight rhythm section, Classical and Bluesy riffin, and the singing arragements by Lawson are really special, like a friendly Peter Hammill without the darkness, great English classical rock...Easy cd to find compared to their others, Recommended to Loyal old proggies...

Abandoning most traditional guitar based rock values for grander keyboards and operatic-y vocals should have fans of Gentle Giant to 90 Day Men intrigued. Though minor missteps overwhelm the album as a whole, the sound and approach mainly remains engaging still, surprising in itself given the glut of prog we had at the time, and how much has fallen by the wayside since.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the sake of accuracy..., May 31, 2008

A previous reviewer is mistaken as to the release of GREENSLADE's albums in the U.S.A. Their first "self-tiled", that we are reviewing here, WAS released on Warner Brothers in this country. Ditto for their 3rd LP, "Spyglass Guest", which was released here by Mercury, and IMHO remains their best work. The 2nd "Bedside Manners Are Extra" was not available on these shores, except as an import. Both that, and "Spyglass Guest" were available in the dawning age of CD's as pricey Japanese imports, both of which I have. All of GREENSLADE's releases cry out for decent remastering! They were available once as expensive Japanese "mini-sleeve" editions, but I have no knowledge of their sonic qualities...

I actually have this on vinyl and I purchased it when it first came out back in the day. I became a Greenslade fan and have a few of their other albums. If you enjoy keyboards this is a good disc to get. The absence of guitars never bothered me. This is a nice addition to any prog rock collection.
