The Lithium-Ion Advantage

Update - the good news: 4-year warranty and there's an affiliated service center in my city. The bad news: The problem was cedar twigs and needle debris clogging the trimmer, but when this occurs, it's may not be possible for the user to clear the jam without opening the motor housing, which would invalidate the warranty. So, when using it, you have to avoid holding it in a way that permits cuttings falling back onto it. That's nearly impossible when trimming anything overhead. You would have to have a ladder or scaffold or cherry picker of sufficient height. Not good.
Still, for the price, performance, and warranty--a good deal.
Pros:
- very good battery life... a fully charged battery outlasted about 2 hrs of on/off hedge and bush trimming, and I saw no power fade
- decent power... I cleaned about a dozen different bushes and a couple very small tree branches with no problem; this a "1/2 notch" less powerful than gas or corded trimmers I've used before, but nothing dramatic
- good ergonomics and weight... easy to handle by smaller adults/spouses/etc.
Cons:
- none so far
This trimmer works well, blades are sharp, and without a cord you are free to move about your garden without having to watch where the cord is. Cords and hedge trimmers just don't belong together. You're able to move quickly from one hedge to the next without having to untangle or watch to make sure the cord is not in the way. I've used it on holly and other small branched shrubs and it works well for this purpose. It also comes with a blade cover that protects the dual blades when it is not in use.
The 20-volt lithium battery provides a long charge and I've yet to use the tool long enough to run the battery down. I have a small property and the battery provides enough charge that I can complete my landscape chores using the edger and trimmer without having to recharge.
If you already have the Greenworks edger that comes with the battery, the hedge trimmer may be a very worthwhile addition to your garden tools. I discarded my very old corded hedge trimmer right after the first time I used the Greenworks cordless hedge trimmer. It is one first cordless garden tools that I believe is an improvement over a corded version.
