3.0 out of 5 stars Runs well a bit on the heavy side and watch out for shipping
Runs well and quiet. Operated it twice so it's still being field tested in my eyes. Issues are: it's heavy especially w/the battery so I would not recommend it for someone of petite size. Also, it was slightly damaged when I received it. I had to fix up the height adjuster since it was jammed due to being damaged. Other than that hoping to use it for the 4 years that it's...

I have used several electric mowers, and this is the most powerful and durable one I have yet used. The main body is made of metal. The cut-off switch is also metal, and much more durable than the other electric mowers I have used.

It mulches well, and the side blower also works well. But when using the rear bag, most of the grass remained scattered on the lawn.

It handles tall grass and weeds easily. I even ran over some thick branches, and it mulched them without any problem.

The battery lasts about 1 1/2 hours on my lawn, on a full charge. I would probably look into buying an extra battery for use on large lawns.

My only complaint about the mower is that it is HEAVY. It is much heavier than my corded electric was, and even much heavier than a typical gas-powered machine. I kind of like the resistance workout I get pushing it up-hill, but pushing 87 lbs of mower that is not self propelled will not work for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars More powerful than expected, July 10, 2010

This review is from: Greenworks 25222 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery (Lawn & Patio)
My previous mower was unpowered, so I'm coming at this from a different direction than most. It's certainly heavy in a literal sense, if for some reason you have to drag it up steps or something. But it mows fairly easily. I WANT a bit of a workout from a mower, and this one gives me about the same aerobic exercise I'd get from a brisk walk. The battery itself is quite heavy, and if you're like me and keep the mower in the shed but the battery charger inside at an outlet, you'd better be of average strength just to lug it back and forth.

The power pleasantly surprised me. I'd let my grass get to about a foot high by the time it arrived, but found it easily handled that, as well as fairly thick weeds. The only thing that gave it trouble was some really thick, matted, long-dead grass--it managed that too, but only very slowly and with rapid battery drain. I've sometimes been less than careful about clearing sticks and rocks from its path, and nothing terrible has happened.

The battery took a few cycles to get fully charged, but now lets me mow either the front yard or the back yard on one charge (I've got a typical small suburban lot). The battery drains more rapidly when it's working harder, so if I mowed every week I could probably do front and back on one charge, but with every other week the taller grass makes it drain a little faster. The battery has a charge indicator, which isn't particularly accurate (it indicates it's mostly full for far too long), but is still quite helpful. The power does drop a bit when the battery is low, which is actually useful as another kind of low-battery warning.

While I've never used a gas mower, it's quite clear to me that the ability to turn an electric on and off repeatedly is a big advantage. That way it can be off when being pulled backward, when clearing obstacles in front of it, etc., with no safety issues. It's certainly quieter than a gas mower, too--about the volume of an upright vacuum cleaner.

It mows almost all the way out to the side (but not the front), so by mowing parallel to a fence I can get all but an inch or two of the fringe.

I always use it as a mulcher; with thick grass it can sometimes get a little bit gummed up with the clippings.

I've had it now for more than a month, and it's wearing fine. One place where I can foresee trouble is the safety switch/power-on bar combination. Fairly often, the combination doesn't trip right, and it doesn't turn on when I want it to. Trying again generally works, and it only costs me about ten seconds, but I do wonder if that problem will get worse over time.

Overall, an excellent light-duty mower. I wouldn't use it if I had to do half an acre, but for a smallish lawn the combination of power and maneuverability make it a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freeing myself from gasoline feels so incredibly GOOD !, May 23, 2010

This review is from: Greenworks 25222 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery (Lawn & Patio)
I had no trouble unpacking and assembling this mower, followed the simple directions in manual. Charged the battery as described in manual. Next day, I went to start the mower and had trouble with depressing the start button and bail switch, couldn't get it to start. Called the Company and had no trouble getting a person (9 am - 5 pm, MON-FRI). Extremely helpful and knowledgable about the product, gave me the right answer to my problem. Problem being that the bail switch was not fully open and was not releasing the start button. I gave the bail switch a good pull to open it and pressed the start button and sqeezed the bail and it started right up. I mowed the front and back yard with no problem, it worked beautifully! And let me tell you, it feels really good (Liberating) to be weaning myself off of gasoline (electric bike is next on my wish list). As for the weight of the mower, actually a little lighter than my ex-gas mower and easier to maneuver around. All-around well built, easy to use, and good looks for the price! I'm very happy with my purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars 480 watts of cutting power, May 3, 2011

Only used one time, so still testing. Did all that was advertised. Performed better than I expected in tough high grass.

When comparing electric mowers, you need to look at the total power the electric motor produces, not just the volts. Total power is Volts x Amps. This 24v motor is 20 amps, for total power of 480 watts. In comparison, the 36 volt mowers seem to use a 12 amp motor, for a total of 432 watts. End result means this 24 volt mower is 11% more powerful than the 36 volt mowers..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product but inital defects. Amazon replaced though, August 24, 2010

This review is from: Greenworks 25222 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery (Lawn & Patio)
PROS: removable battery, cuts through thick grass better than my similar black and decker (my B&D would always shut off in thick grass and required 2 minutes wait before i could start again), nice side discharge chute.

ISSUES"
1. As experienced by other reviewers, the mower height guide was bent when I received it. Had to bend it back into shape myself.

2. Rear wheel falls off - realized that there is supposed to be a groove in the rear axle for a c-clip to hold the wheel in place - this is missing in my unit.

Amazon do not accept returns for this item as they say it is a hazardous item (due to battery). I contacted them anyway and they agreed to replace the lawnmower. However now they say it is okay to send back the defective one at their expensive. At least I am happy now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy, July 22, 2011

I bought this mower at Pep Boys when I read about their settlement with the US EPA. A few years back Pep Boys was selling Chinese motorcycles and ATV's that didn't meet US air quality and emission standards so in addition to a multi-million dollar fine to the US EPA they also initiated a gas lawn mower exchange program to reduce the carbon footprint they created with the Chinese motorcycles and ATV's they sold. I brought in my old Toro gas mower and walked out with the Greenworks 25222 for only $150. Not a bad deal.

I charged this thing up the night before my first mowing mission and it easily handled a third of an acre the next morning. I was surprised at the power of the machine and the speed at which the blade turns. This rivals my old Toro (which was a great mower) for cutting ability.

I especially like the ease at which this thing can be cleaned. I just remove the battery pack, flip it upside down and hose it off. I couldn't do that with my gas mower because all of the fluids would drain out. When you remove the battery pack from this thing, it's really light and can be stored on its end (again, no problem with fluids draining out).

All in all this was a great purchase.

I'm attempting a return on this item but may have to bite the bullet since I bought on Amazon and past official return date. This is not a practical motor for a reasonably sized yard with reasonably tall grass. It takes me 2 or more iterations over the lawn for a complete job, which means I have to use more than 1 battery charge, unless I use the extension cord which is a comedy in itself. So I've had enough with this mower and am looking for a standard gas one. I don't have hours a week to spend mowing my lawn. Also, the engine has started to emit a whitish smoke that smells like burning rubber. Will send to the Greenworks local customer center who, BTW, didn't know they serviced this brand product.

I was a little apprehensive about switching to a cordless mower after reading reviews about limited range, but this baby did not let me down. I have a 7500 sq ft lot, but subtract the house, patio, driveway and sidewalk, it is probably about 5000 sq ft of yard. As soon as it arrived, I charged the battery overnight(about 18 hours) and mowed the front & back yards, little more than an hour of runtime. The charge indicator on the battery only dropped one notch. I should probably mention the lawns were rather tall since they hadn't been mowed for over a month, because we just moved in and didn't have a mower. I then put it away and mowed both front and back yards again two weeks later. Now the battery had dropped 2 more notches to the yellow light.

My previous mower was a Black & Decker MM875 corded electric mower and it was good, but once you cut the cord you never go back. The Greenworks 25222 is much more powerful. It ground up small fallen tree branches(probably ~ 1/2" thick) and tore through thick, tall grass that used to choke the Black & Decker until it stopped. This baby never even sputtered or slowed down.

One caveat, the bag is kind of small. You will have to empty it more often than most mowers. If you prefer to mulch rather than bag, this won't be an issue. I didn't mind so much, and the opening from the mower to the bag is large and direct from the cutting area straight into the bag, which means fewer clogs. The B&D had a 6" tube from the cutting area to the bag that would get plugged up every time you hit a wet patch of grass.
If you are looking for a cordless electric mower, BUY THIS ONE! It's price is not much more than a corded electric, and cheaper than a good gas mower.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect a gas mower and you'll be surprised, October 11, 2011

This review is from: Greenworks 25222 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this mower 2 mowing seasons ago. I knew going in that cordless mowers don't have a ton of power. Well they have plenty of power, cutting right through 8 inch grass on its first day on the job. Now certainly you're not going to cut a 1/3 of an acre at 8 inches : My yard is right on 1/3 acre, but I have a lot of mature trees in the back, so probably 1/4 or just a bit less of grass. As long as the grass doesn't get too tall I can get through the yard on one charge. Mulch feature works great though I don't use it often. The bag is a joke unless your yard is 10x10feet. This season the rigging that adjusts mower height got loose and the adjuster bar kept slipping off and down to the lowest setting. Tightened it up with a 3/8 allen wrench and it was good as new. That is the ONLY maintenance I've performed. All in all this mower does a very good job, is low maintenance, and cheap to operate. Cordless mowers aren't for everyone, but more homeowners should seriously consider them.
