Book Description

For the First Time October 1, 2003
Make a greeting card that is a precious gift in itself, the very first time you try. From folding the cardstock to creating a dynamic presentation, this is the beginner's guide that answers every question and provides beautiful templates to copy. Wondering how to mix and match patterned papers, add a window, and use beads and other embellishments? Go straight to those sections and follow the simple instructions. Craft a card that coordinates stripes with French toile prints. Wish everyone a happy holiday with a twirling Christmas Tree Window Card: the tree twirls delightfully on a string. Send a new baby a card with a silver pacifier charm; later, the charm can go on a bracelet or necklace. You'll also learn how to sew objects onto a card, construct a multidimensional card or a pop-up, incorporate pressed flowers or eyelets, design collaged cards, and so much more.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In a workable format, a series of questions is posed and answers given that instruct and entertain about a specific craft and its techniques--again, from Chapelle Studios and its resident genius, Vanessa-Ann. This time, the subject is greeting cards and their how-tos. Although this guide in no way matches some of the most recent publications in terms of artistry, it does introduce novices to the ins and outs of applying scissors to papers, then adding trims and adhesives. Four sections define the content, each progressively more detailed and intricate; the author starts with the basics and basic techniques, then proceeds beyond the basics to creative presentations. Projectsincludepop-ups, accordion pleats, punch art, pockets for confetti, rubber and postage stamps, among a wealth of suggestions. Enough patterns and instructions are included to satisfy the noncreative types. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, great pictures, June 19, 2006
This review is from: Greeting Cards for the first time (Hardcover)
Although I am not quite sure this is indeed the right book for those making greeting cards "for the first time" as the title suggests, this is indeed a charming, very creative Greeting Cards book.
The strength of "Greeting cards for the first time" stems first and foremost from the great pictures which give you a host of new ideas, even without bothering to read the instructions. I first went over the book and started digesting the images, the materials, the colors and the different combinations suggested and only then started going over the instructions more thoroughly.
Not all the materials were familiar to me (a good example would be the Dauber Duos inks I met here for the first time) and not all of them are presently available for my usage, but this was a good way to learn about the new materials in the market and their usage.
One of the minuses of "copying" other people's work is that you feel you must repeat exactly what you see in the picture, a feeling that can be frustrating at times when the stamps used are no longer available or if you lack a cardstock in the exact specific color... but if you overcome this craving the suggestions can start a whole new range of ideas.
Regarding my previous comment, although I have been making Greeting cards for a long time, some of the techniques used in the book were not regular or easy, and you do need some scrapbooking or craft usage experience in order to enjoy the writer's suggestions to the most, although the writer is very orderly and percise in her instructions. People with some crafting experience however, can more easily enjoy the instructions..
I loved the addition of "what to say" in every greeting card shown in the book. The writer words were always very sweet and to the point ("How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?)
