About the Author

McSweeney's began in 1998 as a literary journal 'Timothy McSweeney's Quarterly Concern' edited by best-selling author Dave Eggers (author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) that published only works rejected by other magazines. Today, McSweeney's has attracted works from some of the finest writers in the country, including William T. Vollmann, Rick Moody, Joyce Carol Oates, and many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars At 15˘ a postcard, an ocean's sweaty value June 16, 2009
Format:Cards
Just got my copy, and I was pleasantly surprised by the packaging. You can't tell from Amazon's picture, but this collection comes in a nice recipe-card-style box. The box makes it super easy to flip through and enjoy all the cards.

Here are the first cards I've mailed off, to give you a sense:

1) a photo of crutches by David Byrne.
2) a complete short story by Jonathan Safran Foer that has been typeset in teeny-tiny font.
3) the bird from the cover of McSweeney's 4, painted by Dave Eggers.
4) a gross photograph of toothpaste on a hot dog.
5) a funny postcard that just says "DEAR INTERNET CITIZEN," with a cute little drawing of a loaf of bread beneath the words.

The cards are divided into 5 tabbed sections, and the tabbed section-dividers are, themselves, postcards. (I've posted a photo that sort of shows this. Thanks to whoever shot it!)

Roughly 80% of the collection consists of artwork (and a couple stories, like the Foer) from McSweeney's publications. The other 20% is all-new stuff from McSweeney's contributors.

I don't understand why Chronicle Books is the publisher of this, and not McSweeney's itself (they're a publisher, right?), but anyway it's a great value, as postcards go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cards, great deal December 4, 2009
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
I, too, am no great fan of McSweeney's The Magazine, but McSweeney's The Postcards are splendid -- quirky, fun, and a broad enough range of styles and themes to cover any occasion or recipient. Nicely printed on good quality stock, these are a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you love about McSweeney's and more March 21, 2010
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really loved this. Every postcard is unique and charming in their own way. You might recognize some of them from previous McSweeney's books (illustrations or covers) and there are also a few short stories in some of the postcards. And for 100 gorgeous postcards, it's definitely worth your money.
