2.0 out of 5 stars Too complicated
I do not like the way it is set up to look up information for each chapter and subject. It flops around to look up added info by having to flip pages from one end to another chapter to get a better understanding of each subject being covered per chapter. This is why I say it is too complicated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always reliable, September 1, 2004
This review is from: The Gregg Reference Manual (Spiral-bound)
I love Gregg. I've used it for years, both for myself and in classes, and it has never failed me. What makes this book so terrific? Four factors: First, the information about grammar and usage is absolutely mainstream, quite consistent with the majority of other important references (The Chicago Manual of Style, for one). Second, it is accurate and reliable. Third, the outstanding index makes the book wonderfully easy to use; you can look something up, in everyday terms, and readily find a rerence. Fourth, the rules are short and the examples clear; once you've found the rule you need, you can read it, grasp it, and 30 seconds later be on your way.

As a full-time trainer of writers and editors, I have used Gregg with every population from grammar-challenged support staff to experienced editors and highly educated professionals. In some classes, I have also used the optional worksheets (available separately). I find that Gregg works well for both native and non-native speakers of English.

I can't recommend Gregg highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, September 22, 2004
This review is from: The Gregg Reference Manual (Spiral-bound)
I first encountered Gregg when it was a required text in an English composition class I took in college. Over the past several decades, I've bought every new edition of the GRM and have relied on it in my work in various educational institutions. Like me, you may want to have one copy for home and one copy for the office. I absolutely agree with other reviewers that it is not only easy to understand but also easy to use. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

As a written and oral communications trainer specializing in grammar, I need the best reference manual I can find for my students. After reviewing dozens of them for over a decade, I continue to give The Gregg Reference Manual by William Sabin an A+. It is the only one I recommend because it is so comprehensive in scope, easy to use, and simple to understand. The new 10th Edition with its attractive format and expanded treatment of e-mail takes an already outstanding book and makes it even better.

Working with varied groups as a grammar expert, I am concerned about receiving a question I can't answer. Thanks to The Gregg Reference Manual, that's never happened. I've found answers to questions about even the finest points of grammar as do my students. Regardless of the concept in question, the book is amazingly easy to navigate, thanks to its unique index. Unlike others, this one does not simply contain page references. Mr. Sabin references the numerous and detailed subjects in his index to distinctly numbered and lettered paragraphs instead. Those paragraphs contain both clear explanations of the related rules along with enlightening examples that serve to clarify rather than complicate the issues in question.

In my business, I have worked with thousands of corporate and government employees ranging from experts in English to those who can barely differentiate between a subject and a verb. Whatever their English expertise or lack thereof, I recommend this manual to all of them. Without exception, those who bought it are praising it for the reasons mentioned in this review and more.

Try it for yourself, and join the myriad of other satisfied users who say, "Gregg is great!" The new 10th Edition is even greater.

This review is from: The Gregg Reference Manual (Spiral-bound)
I am a medical transcriptionist and my job requires to know punctuation, spelling, and good grammar. This book is presently serving its purpose. I may not know everything but whenever I have a question regarding punctuation and grammar, I always refer to the book. Because of this book, I am able to do my job confidently and it is so rewarding to know that I am doing it right. I still have a lot to read up on this book, but I am glad that there is such a book to help out people like me, although a high school graduate and still needing help in these areas. Thank you for making it possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gregg Reference Manual, an Indispensable Tool, July 29, 2004
This review is from: The Gregg Reference Manual (Spiral-bound)
During my 15 years of consulting and training in business and government all over the United States, I've always recommended The Gregg Reference Manual to my clients as their one authority for grammar, punctuation, and business writing questions. I urge them to make a copy available to every employee who writes. I've found that The Gregg Reference Manual is reliable, clear, authoritative, thorough, and easy to use. In my opinion, the Gregg manual is the only choice for a business writing style guide. My clients are uniformly pleased with the choice.
