Hace algún tiempo, un amigo del cual no divulgaremos su nombre, nos pedía insistentemente que le recomendaramos un disco de Jazz que apantallara a la dama que en aquel momento pretendía (y ha pretendido a muchas), con la idea de hacerse el interesante.

En aquel momento, le propusimos el disco: The Köln Concert, de Keith Jarrett, quizá uno de los discos más famosos de esta corriente alternativa del Jazz y que es parte del sello discográfico europero ECM.

Hemos de confesar que somos rabiosos fanáticos de esta colección y que muy raras veces nos vemos decepcionados por alguno de sus títulos. Baste decir que no sólo la selección de músicos es increible, sino que el trabajo artístico que conlleva cada disco, es un verdadero deleite desde el momento mismo en que vemos la carátula de la inmensa mayoría de ellos.

Es una lástima que sea harto complicado conseguir discos de esta editora, pues son muy pocos los establecimientos que los ofrecen. Sin embargo, no por ello habremos de cejar en nuestro empeño de seguir coleccionando títulos de esta disquera.

En esta ocasión nos permitimos comentar uno de los últimos trabajos del pianista Brad Mehldau, quien acompañado de un grupo muy sólido de músicos nos ofrece, en dos micas, cuyo título es Highway rider, una agradable y reconfortante experiencia en los dos discos que componen el álbúm. Y hemos de aclarar que si bien ésta entrega no es de la línea ECM, no por ello desmerece en nada el trabajo que se nos ofrece.

Para comenzar, hay que destacar el trabajo de Joshua Redman, quien está a cargo del Saxofon tenor, y que le da el colorido a la mayoría de los temas del disco.

Sin embargo, hemos de apuntar que el corte NowYou mustclimb alone, nos recordó enormemente a otro miembro de ECM, Egberto Gismonti y que no por ello desmerece, pues la pieza resulta bastante buena. De esta manera, la invitación no se centrará en algunos de los cortes porque a nuestro entender, todos tienen una manufactura excelente, y pueden resultar bastante tranquilizadores, pues hay una cierta mesura en la estructura de cada una de ellas, aunque el trabajo del piano y el sax es lo que más resalta en cada una.

Así las cosas, la banda está integrada por Jeff Ballard y Matt Chamberlain, en la batería; Larry Grenadier, en el bajo; Joshua Redman, en el Sax tenor y; Brad Mehldau, en el piano. El disco fue producido en 2010 por Jon Brion y la excelente fotografía de la portada es de Richard Misrach.

Algunos datos sobre Brad Mehldau.

Mehldau nació en 1970, en EU., y desde los seis años, aprendió a tocar el piano. Conoció el jazz seis años después, nada más y nada menos que con un disco de John Coltrane y a partir de ahí, y con influencias de Keith Jarrett,Theloniuos Monk y Charlie Parker, entre otros, el joven Brad inició sus pininos en este género musical.

En 1988 ingresa a la universidad New Scholl, de Nueva York, a estudiar Jazz, para iniciar tocando en el grupo de Joshua Redman hasta 1994, cuando organiza su propio trío.

Es un gran seguidor de Radiohead y los Beatles, y ahora se le conoce como líder del Brad Mehldau Trío, formado por él; Larry Grenadier, en el bajo y; Jorge Rossy, primero y Jeff Ballard, despues, en la batería.

Algunos de sus muchos discos son: la serie El arte del trío, Places, House on hill y Metheny/Mehldau quartet, que grabó con el excelente guitarrista Pat Metheny.Highway Rider
