An ideal pack for overnight hikes, the Gregory z55 is comfortable and supportive while on the trail. The z55 is outfitted with the company's proprietary JetStream LTS suspension system, which uses a lightweight, thermo-molded framesheet to provide true airflow across your back. As a result, you'll feel as strong and refreshed toward the end of your hike as you did at the beginning. The framesheet also employs a hollow aluminum stay to support the load without adding excess weight. Best of all, the system's ventilated, wicking harness and waist-belt systems combine for all-day comfort, with a padded lumbar promoting a positive load transfer.

Storage-wise, the z55--which comes in small, medium, and large sizes--includes a large main compartment, an expandable front bucket pocket, quick-access waist-belt pockets, and dual axe/tool attachment points. The z55 is even hydration compatible, with a hydration sleeve and dual ports. Other features include an Auto-Fit harness system, side and bottom compression, welded water-resistant zippers, and a tough exterior made of 210D HT double-box ripstop and broken twill nylon fabrics. All Gregory packs carry a lifetime warranty.

About Gregory Mountain Products
Company founder Wayne Gregory--who designed his first backpack at 14 as part of a Boy Scout project--opened Gregory Mountain Products in 1977 in San Diego, California. From the start, Wayne wasn't just meticulous about designing packs that improved upon fit and used the best materials available, he also wanted to know how his designs worked in the field and what he could do better, a heritage of accessibility that has continued to the present. In the early days, he loved to talk tech with customers at his retail store in San Diego, asking for feedback on what worked and what didn't. Ultimate, Wayne realized that fit was king in the backpack business, and he pioneered many firsts, including being the first company to build backpacks in different frame, harness, and waist belt sizes; the first (and still only) pack manufacturer to develop a waist-belt system that adjusts to fit different hip angles, automatically improving load transfer; and developing the center-locking bar tack, a stitch that ends and locks off on the center of a seam instead of the side to improve strength at the major stress points. From the earliest days, Gregory packs were noted for their innovative design, ergonomic and comfortable fit, and high quality.

I've taken only two trips with this pack so far. One was a weekend in Letchworth State Park, NY. The other was a week on the Appalachian Trail. There is a lot of room in this "small pack". I really like the pockets on the waistbelt. I was able to keep some essentials handy (like headlamp, compass, energy bar). I will admit I am not an ultralight person. I was looking for something lighter than the 5lb pack I've been using for the past 5-6 years. You can't go wrong with this choice. I usually keep my raingear in the top flap pocket. Making it easy to reach. Also I keep my stove/fuel bottle packed close to the side pocket of the main compartment in order to reach it quickly; and not have to unpack everything to get to it. Lastly I noted that the pack is very slim lined. You won't have to worry about a tree branch catching your pack as you walk by.

I bought mine at the local high-end outdoor gear store. I was initially looking to buy an Osprey, but the Gregory was the only brand that felt very comfortable with 40lbs loaded in it.

my only gripe is that I wish it had a few more internal storage compartments for small, important items, such as a wallet.

This is a great pack. It essentially rides on your hips without the need for tight shoulder straps. Very adjustable as well.

The pack has lots of pockets, though maybe not as many as I would like. The side load is pretty cool, but different from packs with both top and bottom load. The compression straps are everywhere and really let you pack a ton of equipment in a small space. The waistband is adjustable, though the pack length is not. All in all, a really comfy pack that holds everything with ease - the weight is well masked by carrying with the hips and shoulders. All in all, awesome price for an awesome pack!

Third real pack I've purchased over the years and by far the best! Only downside is the lack of an exterior pocket for a water bottle. Other than that, even with thirty pounds this thing feels lighter than my 30 ltr pack. Cavernous main compartment, super compressable, not sure why they bothered with the side access zipper but this if my favorite pack to date.
