3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly darker version, very enjoyable, February 4, 2005
This review is from: Gremlins (Paperback)
If you're a big fan of the movie, this book will probably entertain you as well. It gives an alternate look at a couple of the movie's events that may not have translated onto the big screen particularly well. For example, the battle between the evil mogwai and Barney the dog is given in great detail. We are also privy to some of the thoughts of Gizmo and Spike (and Barney), which gives us some insight into where Gremlins have come from and how they got to where they are at the time that the book begins.

I found the writing to be serviceable, with a couple of appreciated flourishes (such as the chapter which consists of only two words). The story itself is very imaginative and original, although you're probably already familiar with it.

Without being any more sophisticated, the book is a darker version of the movie, and director Joel Dante would have probably preferred to bring this version to the screen if he didn't have to worry about reaching a broad family audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good novelization, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Gremlins (Paperback)
Gremlins has been my favorite movie right behind Jaws. Its THE movie from my childhood and when I learned that there was a novelization I had to get it.

Its actually very different from the movie. Im not sure I like the back story of the Mogwai but overall its a quick, well written and entertaining novelization. The events in the later half of the book are almost completely different than in the film which is good because it makes you feel like your reading a novel and not just an adaptation from a script. If you're a big Gremlins fan I definately suggest to pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Back Story on the Origin of Mogwai/Gremlins, Kate's Crusade to Stop Chemical Plant Real Estate Deal & Other Stuff, January 29, 2012

This review is from: Gremlins (Paperback)
There's two versions of Gremlins in book form, both by George Gipe. This full story adult fiction 278 page version, you'll probably only find as a battered soft cover paperback with hardening yellowing pages published in 1984 around the time the movie was being promoted in cinemas and a 77 page young adult version of the tale from this book which was released later the same year (comes with a white border around cover). So if it's purely the story and not a couple of extra illustrations you're after, you'll want to make sure your getting the right one if buying it online.

If you've seen the film the book does remain loyal to the basic events of the movie (this was written using Chris Columbus' original screenplay not the more family friendly Spielberg end product). You'll learn the origins of the mogwai, which to be honest isn't that satisfying, but still interesting to know. Unlike the movie we get inside Gizmo's head (who we learn hates the name Gizmo). We know what he is thinking as well as what the other mogwai are thinking in both mogwai and gremlin form. In fact Spike and Gizmo have quite a few conversations which Billy and the other humans can't understand but we do. Kate's crusade against Mrs Deagle's plans to sell all her houses, which a large proportion of the town including Billy's and her family rent, to a company that wants to build a chemical plant takes up more of the book than her adventures with mogwai and gremlin creatures. Billy's feeling towards Kate are also delved into more. It's not until the final third of the book that the feeding after midnight occurs and the real fun begins though, but when it does it's simply non stop entertainment as the radio station's broadcasts tell us what the gremlins are up to all over the town of Kingston Falls. At one point the radio station says all their calls are being diverted so you can't call them but luckily they ignore this little plot hurdle and keep somehow being updated in a time before online communications and individual staff mobile phones.

There are also 8 pages of colour stills from the movie although you've got to remember photos in book technology wasn't that brilliant back then and a fair few are a bit blurry or dark. They are in the middle of the book and as is always the case with these sorts of books come away from the spine pretty easily. They also give away the ending if you hadn't seen the movie being where they are placed. Also there's the odd one depicting the movie version and not the scene from the movie such as the racist snow plough operator Mr Futterman's encounter with a Gremlin occurring outside in the photo when it happened inside his garage in the novel. Apart from the little radio station broadcast hurdle in the story, Gremlins is a well written must read novel for any fan of one of the best Christmas film ever made.
