If you like Hunter Rose....,

This review is from: Grendel: Red, White, & Black (Grendel (Graphic Novels)) (v. 8) (Paperback)
This book continues the collaborations between Wagner and guest illustrators depicting episodes from the life of grandiose assassin Hunter Rose, the first and most entertaining character to sport the Grendel costume. Despite all the obvious criticisms one could direct against the sadistic anti-hero and the adolescently pretentious tone of the writing, the character and stories remain compelling, with the vividly imagined quality of true, if nightmarish, inspiration.

This book is collection of short stories about Hunter Rose, like Grendel: Black, White and Red. Sometimes script reminds me of Road Runner cartoon because it is so repetitive.
I think that, if you like Hunter, you should read these two books AND "Devil by Deed". After it, continue with "Devils child" and you will read the best of the best considering pre-nuclear Grendel tales...uh stories

This review is from: Grendel: Red, White, & Black (Grendel (Graphic Novels)) (v. 8) (Paperback)
This is the first work featuring Wagner's Grendel that I've come across, so I can't compare it to any of the other Grendel stuff out there. I can say that Wagner here demonstrates an exceptional writing talent, and that the art accompanying his stories in this volume strikes me as innovative, interesting, and occasionally even beautiful. The combination of eloquent nihilism and brutal violence that appears to be Grendel's trademark is both compelling and moving. The stories, which are short and simply plotted, are not intimidating to the Grendel novice, e.g. me, and the quick pace keeps the pages turning.
I was pleasantly surprised by this collection, and would recommend it (but not lend it) to any fan of the medium. |
