Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sembach's introduction offers reverential musings and a superficial chronicling of events in Garbo's life already familiar to most readers. It's best to skip this section and go right to the pictures, taken by 12 photographers, including Cecil Beaton and Edward Steichen. Beginning with an eerily mature 15-year-old in 1920, these portraits show the progression of Garbo from soulful model to vamp, tragic heroine, comedienne and, finally, recluse. The last photos by George Hoyningen-Huene, showing her bedraggled and unkempt, contrast sharply with the cosmetic, composed shots of Garbo in her heyday. It is as though the star's "decay" is the highlighthardly a fitting note on which to end such a fine volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, October 18, 2011
This review is from: Greta Garbo: Portraits 1920 - 1951 (Paperback)
Rizzoli has done a very nice job assembling the professional portraits of Garbo from the age of 15 in Stockholm to a series of shots taken in the early 1950's.

The often-reproduced classic images are here, of course, photographs by Steichen, Hurrell, and Beaton. However, there's a lot to feast your eyes on -- photographs of Garbo in character and of Garbo as Garbo -- 144 pages of b&w images, all of them full page. My personal favorites are the mature Garbo from 1951 shot by George Hoyningen-Huene.

Trade paperback on heavy stock; 3 pounds; with a short biographical introduction.
