5.0 out of 5 stars Big sound for a little amp, January 6, 2011

While many guitarists prefer alot more than 5 watts of power out of a tube amp, I found that for something like practice or perhaps a small gig, this amp would be more than enough. The 5 watts of tube power out of the Gretsch sound much better when pushed than a more powerful SS amp. It has two inputs, the second being a bit cleaner sounding then the first, which is a little warmer. It comes with a 6 inch speaker that plays ok, but it has an external jack, so I pulled the little speaker out and made the Gretsch into a head for a 1x12 cab with an old Cleveland. That really brought out the sound. They require two tubes, a 12ax7 and a 6v6 (which are provided), but there are alternatives to these tubes that can alter the sound (slightly). I was impressed with the build quality, and it is just a very good looking, simple, and a great sounding amp, through both Strats and LPs. It has alot of potential and would probably be decent at a small gig or something (if miked). Also, I often see reviews suggesting adding a kit that has a valve rectifier/standby switch to "protect" the tubes from getting fried. It's not really necessary (your tubes won't get hit by that much on power-up). For the price, it really delivers

This amp was ok when I first hooked it up but, after two mods it was great sounding and loud for such a small amp. I installed an Alnico speaker and upgraded the tubes. It's the same as the Fender amp so there is alot of mods out there for this amp. Great retro look.
