Book Description

January 1, 1999
The Grey Cup: A History is the inside story of Canada's première sporting event and the most comprehensive book ever written on Canada's national autumn classic. From the first game in 1909, Graham Kelly covers it all, drawing on extensive research and on 35 years of personal interviews and observations, taking readers behind the scenes and into the lives of the stars whose names have become synonymous with the game.

Readers will discover the truth about the Mud Bowl Myth, which holds that a player almost drowned in the mud. They'll read about struggles against racism by Rollie Miles, Johnny Bright and George Reed. They'll learn how, over two decades, the outlandish Leo Cahill was reincarnated for the Toronto Argonauts three times. And they'll read the truth behind the Etcheverry-Patterson trade and why confession isn't always good for the soul.

About the Author

Graham Kelly's love of football began when he was waterboy and assistant equipment manager with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1956. Since 1972 he has written a weekly column on the CFL during the football season for the Medicine Hat News. During those 27 years he has attended virtually every Calgary Stampeder home game and has covered 24 Grey Cups. And in all that time he has kept extensive records of not just the outcome of the games but of the personalities who thrilled the crowds and the stars whose names became synonymous with the Grey Cup.

Graham Kelly's extensive knowledge of the game has resulted in him being selected to vote for the CFL All-Star teams and to be a nominator and selector of the CFL Schenley and League awards. He also has been selected three times from among the Calgary media to choose Coach of the Year.
