Its 1959. Nine year old Cally and brother, Bud befriend a colored man, Isaac Washington, caretaker of a rundown cemetary, and boathouse along the St. Johns River in Florida; an unusual friendship, given its during a time of segregation. Through cirmcumstances beginning Halloween, Cally and Bud are swept into a frightening world, of deadly, dark secrets, hidden in the seemingly peaceful pine forests and groves surrounding the river; secrets of hatred, disguised inside The River Hunt Club that meets in a ramshackle hotel thought to be haunted. Cally and Bud, with their two sisters and friends, Larry and Gloria, arent sure who to trust or where to turn. Kate asks, If theres going to be trouble, dont you think we should tell the police? Tell them what? Bud answers, Tell them that a bunch of kids were watching a Klan meeting and we think theyre going to do something, but we dont know what, or to who, or where. We dont know anything. Besides, who do we tell; that Billy Bob cop that threatened Isaac? The kids take matters into their own hands and the reader embarks on a suspenseful and action packed ride with these unforgettable young heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Real" Excitement, March 10, 2001
By
L. Jane Lichtfuss (Milliken, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Grey Ghost: A Novel of Suspense (Paperback)
This book is wonderful reading for people of every age. It is "real" excitement because it is about real life happenings and perceptions. The characters that Colleen Affeld uses in her book are very likeable and people with whom the reader can identify. The author writes about an area of the country that she knows which also lends validity to the story. Cally and her brother, Bud, lived in a time when children could be children; however, circumstances in and around where they lived made them see life differently very quickly. The message in this book is great! Our preconceived ideas about others often change when we get to know those folks better. Cally and her friends were fearful of Isaac, a black man who lived nearby but that soon changed to love and intense concern when they thought he had been killed. I had to chuckle at Cally's language and descriptions. She stayed so "in character' throughout the book. This is a book well worth reading!! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Story Teller for Today, February 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Grey Ghost: A Novel of Suspense (Paperback)
The Grey Ghost is a novel I read with great interest and pleasure. It is one of those books that you don't want to put down. Loved the characters and the setting, and all the adventure the young heroes find themselves tangled up in. They take you right along with them, and what a ride it is. Cally, Bud and Isaac are wonderful, you feel as if you know them. I am a retired teacher and I find this novel to be a great offering for middle-schoolers and up. Could be used on school novel lists. Can't wait for the next book from this new author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for reading....., March 8, 2008

This review is from: The Grey Ghost: A Novel of Suspense (Paperback)
I have to be honest. I enjoyed reading the book. The characters and the story it self I found fascinating. But, I did not enjoy the amateur art on every other page. It was as if I were in 1st grade reading class and starting my "Fun with Dick and Jane" series, but with sub-par graphics. I'm sorry if my review offends the "artist" of these graphics, but I honestly feel as if these drawings took away from the book. I just dreaded turning the page to see yet another sketch depicting a section of the story that was being discussed. I myself, as I am sure is true with many people, like to envision the people, places and events within my own imagination. But, to have these images in your head, then to turn the page and have a grade school drawing staring you the face, kind of takes away from it. The drawings are OK, but not publish worthy. These drawings or sketches, which ever you prefer, should have stayed in the doodle pad and not in a "novel of suspense". I am sorry, but they just aren't good enough to be in this or any other book and I think I would have enjoyed the book more if they weren't there.
