The Grey Ghost by Julie Hahnke
Publishing Works, Exeter, NH 2009
For me, this book illustrates the determination and faith of a young boy presented with heartbreaking loss and impossible odds. Along the way he accepts the friendship and help of two perfectly unforgettable animal characters. Julie takes her readers back to a time when cruelty was rampant in the savage wilds of 16th century Scotland. Angus, her young hero, sees, accepts and struggles to overcome devastating obstacles in his first brush with evil. Included with all the beautifully detailed descriptions of the time and place, and delightful fantasy are important life lessons. Additionally, there are maps and illustrations to give the reader a more seamless transition to life in that terrible time. I read it, loved it and bought a book for each of my 10 and 14 year-old granddaughters. Excellent book.

Grey Ghost is Great!, September 23, 2009
This review is from: The Grey Ghost (Wolf's Apprentice) (Hardcover)
The Grey Ghost was a very capturing tale. I was compelled to keep reading, until I finished that last page. I felt as though I were a spirit following Angus on his epic journey through the highlands. The background knowledge of this book is stunning, adding nice little bits to flesh out the background of this tale. Angus is a very dynamic character, going through grief, fear, discovery, cunning, and everything in between. Angus seemed to play differing roles throughout the book, from young helpless victim, to hero on the rise, to puppet master. I enjoyed seeing him using his animal allies, Tethera and Yann, to his advantage. It was a brilliant idea to incorporate the view of animals so integrally into the book. They also seemed to be seamlessly blended into the story, and just added so much. The illustrations were extremely vivid, showing much time and effort put into each pencil line. This book will make you feel fear, sorrow, pity, triumph, and so much more.
