Grey Gull was a cheap US label that came into being in 1919, and relied for its dance band records on a small core of studio musicians that often included Mike Mosiello on trumpet, and Andy Sannella on reeds and steel guitar. Masters were issued, often pseudonomynously, on a variety of labels, including Radiex, Van Dyke, Globe, and Madison, and in England on Goodson and Piccadilly. From that bewildering assortment Jazz Oracle has assembled a fine assortment of hot sides, some of which were once attributed to King Oliver. As is usual with Jazz Oracle reissues, there is a complete discography (albeit that some personnel remain unidentified) and an illustrated liner note which provides much background information to the recordings.
