To quote the Skittles commercial: "taste the rainbow"...and enjoy this groovy fun fest! It's almost a year to the day and another super soundtrack from "Grey's Anatomy" is out in full color. This is one good, good, good album...You might have to put out a few fires it smokes so hot!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing . . .
I loved the first season's soundtrack. The second season had some great songs too. But, this third season has fallen short of expectations. Although there are a handful of songs that I love I don't listen to this volume nearly as much as the others.

To quote the Skittles commercial: "taste the rainbow"...and enjoy this groovy fun fest! It's almost a year to the day and another super soundtrack from "Grey's Anatomy" is out in full color. This is one good, good, good album...You might have to put out a few fires it smokes so hot!

I think it's amazing how each time you listen to a CD you just bought and instantly love, you find new things to love about it the next day and the next, the notes building on your ear, then sinking in to stay, the richness of it stronger than the day before...like pasta the day after you first cook it, it's better than ever!

Since Alex Patsavas is involved (the mastermind behind GA who picks the music for the show) you know this soundtrack has to be something else, every bit as good as the terrific show for which it gives the backdrop.

I adore "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John (very bouncy, very sixties, funny and so hard to stop repeating on your player!)..."Again and Again" by the bird and the bee (as melodic as anything the Carpenters ever did, but much more brainy)..."Something in the Water" by the Jealous Girlfriends (quirky and driven...remember "Ruby Blue" by Roisin Murphy from the first soundtrack?...this is along the same vein, but in its own way...)

Feist appears with a vocal delight called "Sealion"...all I can say is: wow! and more wow!Nina Simone would be jealous...the energy here is so contagious and dares you to keep up with its pace!

There's a 1940s sounding number by Koop called "Come to Me"...irresistible to dance to and very sweet and smart...I love it!!!

Two of the best ballads are: "A Cold Wind Blows Through Your Door" by Bill Ricchini (he gives my fave Josh Rouse some competition when it comes to smooth, sincere vocals) and the lovely "Falling or Flying" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, which burns your heart with its heat factor...

The good news for those of you who might have thought the first two albums were overly maudlin...the third soundtrack really rocks in lots of places (especially with the Jealous Girlfriends, Feist and Jesus Jackson).

There's very little time to be sad!! Well okay, you might need a lot of tissues for the soft and melancholy "Keep Breathing" by Ingrid Michaelson...Meredith must have been onscreen at the time:)! Seriously, this title was especially written for the now infamous wedding dress scene with Cristina! It's no wonder Sandra Oh's up for an Emmy. And lately it seems any music with strings in it(cello or violins) makes me weak in the knees...."Keep Breathing" indeed! You'll be lucky you don't pass out on the floor!

Other standout tracks include:

Jesus Jackson's "Running on Sunshine" gives you feet-tapping excitement with echoes of late 60s/early 70s soul the likes of Sly and the Family Stone. The cleverly suggestive lyrics will put a smile on your face as you dance around like a kid at heart! ("Ain't no clouds in my sky..."--"Something tells me you made me lose it" which I originally thought was "Something tells me your name is Lucy"..."We could cut the rule/make these walls go boom!"--love these catchy hooks, which sound better in the song than they look on paper:) !)

Robert Randolph and the Family Band's sexy "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" will have you searching for their older material (trust me on this, your ears will thank you!)

Mat Kearney's quietly effective "Breath In Breath Out" (which brings U2 to mind) got to me just the way music should...complete with "chills down your spine."

Gomez's "Moon and Sun" provides the expected--but always appropriate and somehow still fresh--tortured love song.

John Legend (how is it possible I just discovered this awesome singer a few weeks ago?) goes slow but still positive with "Sun Comes Up."

This is a must-have to the power of ten!!!You'll be playing it "again and again." Go out and invest right now...and let the sounds wash over you. Wallow in it if you want to. Meredith would!:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, September 14, 2007
This review is from: Grey's Anatomy 3 (Audio CD)
After being disappointed with half of the season 2 Grey's Anatomy soundtrack CD, I almost didn't order Season 3, but I figured I needed to have the complete collection. Some of my favorites songs from the season are included--"Young Folks", "Sealion", "A Cold Wind Blows through Your Door", "Running on Sunshine", "Come to Me", and "Keep Breathing". While I wished several other favorites were on the CD, I like the remainder of the tracks well enough to listen to them and let them grow on me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music...less than perfect track arrangement, September 21, 2007

This review is from: Grey's Anatomy 3 (Audio CD)
This volume includes quite a few more stand-out tracks than volume two, but it doesn't quite reach the level of volume one. The album starts on a high note, but it finishes (as a whole) sort of weakly. (This is no fault of Brandi Carlile, though, as "The Story" is absolutely one of the strongest tracks on the album.)

The infectious "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John is a great way to start. Great catchy pop tracks follow until Grace Potter's stunningly beautiful "Falling or Flying." This is definitely one of the best songs featured in season three, and it really stands out on the album. The next few songs recapture some of the brilliantly quirky aspects of Grey's Anatomy that make it so great, including the ridiculously fun "Ain't Nothing Wrong with That" by Robert Randolph.

The album finishes with some more dramatic, slower pieces. This is where I have a bit of a problem. Now, as viewers have noticed, season three was much more dramatic than the previous seasons (perhaps too much so, but that's for a different kind of review). Tracks ten through fifteen pretty much demonstrate how the season took that turn. The problem with placing all these tracks side-by-side is that it slows the album way down. And it's not that I don't like any of these songs; I just think, for the listener to enjoy their full effects, they could have been better placed throughout the soundtrack.

The three exlusive tracks are all interesting in their own ways, but (as I previously mentioned) they seem to lose their respective effects by their placement. Actually, I just don't really like Mat Kearney's "Breathe In, Breathe Out" all that well. It doesn't do anything for me, and it seems to be the key track that slows the album down. The other two exclusives are good, though. Gomez is pretty much always amazing, and "Moon and Sun" is just another testament to that fact. And John Legend's "Sun Comes Up" is smooth and soulful, of course.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this volume. I might have to hit the random button on my CD player, but the selection of artists here is fantastic.

The John Legend track, "When the Sun Comes Up" made me buy it, but I'm glad I did. Been listening to it all week. More fond of some songs than others, but enjoyable for the most part.

3rd Volume of Greys Anathomy is as good as the first two. The only trouble is trying to remember where the music comes into the scene being shown as you don't hear the music first time round as you are too busy watching what is happening on screen. When the reruns come round you will be able to co-ordinate the music in your head to the scene on screen. A good buy for a brilliant show.
