Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gridiron Leadership is a great book! A thoroughly enjoyable read (filled with self-deprecating pigskin humor), using a fun topic (football!), to teach: 'Deep lessons. Strong lessons. Lasting lessons. . .' about the deadly serious world of leadership. Read this book. You can't help but learn!'" --Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, USA (ret.), Author, On Combat and On Killing, Director, Killology Research Group

"Great book! Gridiron Leadership is a creative blend of football, military and corporate historical vignettes that provide visual examples of leadership, applicable to any organization focused on excellence. Experienced or inexperienced, senior or junior, this book contains many fresh ideas to teach and demonstrate to leaders how to think versus what to think. Evan, Jason and Scott walk you through what it takes to build a winning organization, from the individuals assigned, to selecting your leaders and high performers, to creating the synergy in the team needed to achieve greatness. The beauty of this book is the applicability of the lessons learned to any sport, military organization, business unit, corporation or civic group." --Kenneth O. Preston, Sergeant Major of the Army

"Success on the 'fields of friendly' strife requires the ability to think and execute under physical and mental stress, and playing sports forges important leadership qualities, beginning with selflessness, discipline, adaptability, teamwork, and perseverance. Gridiron Leadership takes the lessons learned between the lines and shows how we can apply them as leaders in other areas of life, from the military to government and the private sector. Written in an engaging style that makes it hard to put down, Gridiron Leadership is a 'must read' for football fans and aspiring leaders everywhere." --General Raymond T. Odierno, Commanding General, Multi-National Force--Iraq

"One key theme that Gridiron Leadership absolutely nails is the clear delineation between true leadership and management. Most recent leadership books interchange the two, and thus miss the mark. The chapter on 'Franchise Players' is fantastic as it highlights the importance of team, stretch goals, commitment, and never shirking responsibility." --Kevin Shuba, Group President, CHEP Americas, USMA Class of 1981

"In their book Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics, authors Evan Offstein, Jason Morwick, and Scott Griffith explore the extent to which attributes that lead to success in sports--motivation, team work, discipline, preparation, adaptability, goal setting--are common to leaders in all fields. As a former high school and college football player, I find their ideas are not only insightful, but also directly applicable to all walks of life.'" --William E. "Brit" Kirwan, Chancellor, University System of Maryland, Co-Chair of Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics

From the Back Cover

Football demands cohesive teamwork, seamless execution, top performance, and strong leaders and coaches. In other words, it requires exactly what any successful enterprise needs. Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics brings the worlds of sports and management together, teaching essential leadership and strategy lessons through the stories, language, and experience of the gridiron.

This remarkable book uses real moments from the worlds of professional and college football, as well as a wide range of evocative football metaphors, in a thoughtful, systematic way to dissect the craft of leadership and communicate essential management lessons. Drawing on the collective decades of experience of its authors and the training course "Gridiron Leadership," developed by coauthor Scott Griffith, it covers the full range of modern organizational issues, including human resources, crisis leadership, ethical leadership, strategic decision making, and organizational change.

With so many leadership and strategy books sending the same messages in the same ways, this fresh approach is truly groundbreaking, using a familiar frame of reference to capture and enhance understanding of the concepts and practice of leadership, strategy, and execution. Covering everything from building a winning team to analyzing the needs of stakeholders, this is the playbook today's leaders have been waiting for.

Gridiron Leadership is an excellent book! In every corporate environment, success or failure boils down to two things, the quality of your plan and, more importantly, your execution of that plan or early recognition of plan change. As in a football game, you can have the best play book, with great plays on offense and great defensive schemes, but if they are continuously executed poorly by unmotivated players, you will not win. If, as a leader/coach, you fail to recognize and make adjustments to your plan in a timely fashion, you will not win. Finally, "attitude is a reflection of leadership", if your team is unwilling to follow you, it doesn't matter how good they are, your likelihood of winning is non-existent. Gridiron Leadership provides the executive reader, fundamentals through vignettes and stories that enforce the lessons learned in this book. These stories discuss sense of purpose, teamwork, trust, communication, moral integrity, giving 110%, not letting your brother down, and playing to win. Effective leaders are always learning and improving. In my opinion, this book is a must read for all aspiring leaders.

Review of "Gridiron Leadership" (Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics) by Evan H. Offstein; Jason M. Morwick, and Scott W. Griffth, Praeger Co.

The book, which contains a foreword by Art Rooney II, Pres of the Pittsburgh Steelers, also has a table of contents and an excellent index

This is a short, excellent, very readable book without - most - of the `mind games' that similar books play. The authors determine, identify and quantify leadership within the genre of football as a game, a sport, but especially a profession - which is what leadership is - a season, a history of various franchises

This is a Leadership manual, a short treatise written by two West Point Grads and a Professional Law Enforcement Leader - a combination of Professionals who have been trained in the art of leadership, survived the crucibles of Military, Civilian, and Law Enforcement situations, and combined their varied talents in order to assemble a treatise on basic leadership!

The volume shows throughout an EXCELLENT research investigative process! Examples of good and poor leadership are up to date, current with today's headlines, today's gridiron and business `stars'. This attribute cannot be overly stressed, empathized! The reviewer was amazed at the breadth and depth of the references!

Another interesting fact, albeit extremely subtle, is the fact that although three individuals are credited with authorship, the treatise is presented with one voice, an excellent work.

The bye week last month gave many fans the chance to catch up on other noble pursuits. In my case, it's often reading, and I had the distinct pleasure of reading a fabulous new book. Entitled "Gridiron Leadership", this succinct book uses football as the backdrop to analyze key traits, tactics, and strategies for successful leadership and winning organizations.

Right off the bat, this book has been endorsed by none other than Steeler President Art Rooney II, who wrote a poignant foreword at the beginning of this book. If that's not enough of an endorsement for this book, then I don't know what would be.

The authors take the reader through the critical steps of leadership and building winning teams -- from the recruitment & retention of winning players (or employees) to building a winning climate in the organization. Each chapter is supported by relevant, real-world examples taken from the gridiron as well the corporate boardroom. This succinct, 180-page book walks the gamut of modern leadership and management -- human resources, crisis leadership, ethical leadership, strategic decision making, and organizational change. The authors and editors did a strong job of making this book smooth and enjoyable to read, and relevant as well with a host of recent examples from the world of football (including Super Bowl 43).

Steeler fans, in particular, will be pleased with the number of positive references and examples related to the Steelers. Obviously, the Steelers are a good model of what a winning climate and strong, consistent leadership looks like, so it was terrific to see the Stillers cited throughout this book.

After reading Gridiron Leadership, I found that it was grounded with theoretical underpinnings of individual differences in emergent leadership behaviors and their relationships to teamwork processes and outcomes. Both personality and cognitive ability were utilized by the authors to examine behaviors of leadership emergence and "team" performance. Peripherally stated modern leadership theories were made interesting for the reader with timely real world examples of leadership examples from both the football field, and the "battlefield" if you will, of both public and private business settings.

In my position as an active police chief in Colorado , I have read numerous leadership books and scholarly peer reviewed articles on leadership theories and behaviors. I found this book's arrival to be timely, because its subject matter is a truth of the organizational environment, especially in the public sector. As a doctoral student in the field of organization and management (ABD) and critical reader, I ask myself while I read any book- is the central hypothesis is true, is it well evidenced and am I experiencing it in my own organization? Is the response advocated by Offstein, Morwick and Griffith persuasive and practical?

I found that Gridiron Leadership was well evidenced, in the sense that the examples drawn on by the authors are often unexpected but nearly always illuminating. I found the authors analysis of leadership strategies based on a foundational approach of football strategic leadership both convincing and helpful. I thought it was a great book!
