Book Description

Set on the blood-soaked streets of Los Angeles, the third explosive thriller featuring ex-military bodyguard Ryan Lock is Black's best yet.

For fans of Robert Crais, Harlan Coben, James Patterson and anyone who likes their thrillers fast-paced and action-packed.

Movie star Raven Lane is one of the most lusted after women in America, with millions of fans to prove it. But when a headless corpse turns up in the trunk of her car, she realizes that fame carries a terrible price.

Fearing for her life, and with the LAPD seemingly unable to protect her, Raven turns to elite bodyguard Ryan Lock for help.

Lock stops bad things happening to good people, but can he stop the tidal wave of violence now threatening the city of Los Angeles as Raven’s predator targets – and kills - those closest to her?

As events spiral out of control, Lock is drawn into a dangerous world where money rules, where sex is a commodity to be bought and sold, and where no one can be trusted, least of all his beautiful new client. But what he cannot know is the terrifying price he's about to pay - just for getting involved...

Praise for Sean Black's Ryan Lock series:

'Sean Black writes with the pace of Lee Child and the heart of Harlan Coben.' – Jospeh Finder

'Black drives his hero into the tightest of spots with a force and energy that jump off the page. This is a writer, and a hero, to watch.' – The Daily Mail

'Sean Black writes like a punch to the gut.' – Jesse Kellerman

'The action comes hot and heavy, but Lock never gives up on a fight. Black's star just keeps on rising.' – Evening Telegraph

“An action movie on the printed page. Throw into this mayhem Ryan Lock, a protagonist tough enough to take on the Jacks of this world (that's Bauer and Reacher) and you've got an adrenalin-rush read that you're not going to forget any time soon.” Russel McLean

Editorial Reviews

Review

'...a smash hit with action thriller fans on both sides of the Atlantic.' - Daily Post
'Keeps the reader guessing right to the gripping final twist.' Sunday Sun
'This series is ace. There are deservedly strong Lee Child comparisons as the author is a Brit (Scottish), his novels US-based, his character appealing, and his publisher the same. This is his third.' - Sarah Broadhurst, The Bookseller
'Black's star just keeps on rising.' - Evening Telegraph

About the Author

Described by crime fiction legend Ken Bruen as 'the future of thriller writing,' Sean Black is known for writing lightning-fast, high-concept conspiracy thrillers, which often tackle controversial subjects (animal rights, pornography, the drug war on the American-Mexican border).A writer who isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty, to research his debut novel, Lockdown, he underwent a month-long close protection training course in the UK and Eastern Europe. The book went on to sell at auction to Transworld, the publisher of Dan Brown, Lee Child and Tess Gerritsen, for over half a million dollars and went on to debut on the official Nielsen/Bookscan bestseller list in its first week on sale. As part of his research for the second book in the series, Deadlock, he spent time inside Pelican Bay Supermax prison in California (see the television interview on his Amazon author page). The third book in the series featuring ex-military bodyguard, Ryan Lock, and his colleague, retired Marine Ty Johnson, Gridlock, will be released in paperback on July 5th.An Ivy League and Oxford University graduate, he has just finished work on the fourth book in the series, The Devil's Bounty. The Devil's Bounty will be available in hardback and as an e-book in August, 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's his best yet! August 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read Sean Blacks first and second books and absolutely loved them. Ryan Lock is an ex-military bodyguard who has worked private security and has now set up his own company that can be called upon for any type of job. He has a partner Ty Johnson who is an ex-marine who Ryan met whilst in Iraq. Together they make a formidable team and seem unafraid to take on any type of work.

In this book, Ryan and Ty are asked to work for famous adult movie actress Raven Lane. Raven is lusted after by many people across the world and has an army of fans, however, when a headless corpse turns up in the boot of her car she feels compelled to get Ryan and Ty in for her private security.

Before long what seems like a simple stalking case gone wrong, turns into a horrific crime spree by what looks like a cold blooded killer.

Sean Black is now on his third book and you can tell that he is pushing himself and the book came across even better than his first two. The book is very fast paced, and this is a lot easier to read as things start off relatively simple but before long the pace picks up and you are thrown along with the characters as things progressively get worse.

The one major difference between this book and his previous is that the murders and crime scenes are a lot more graphic and descriptive. In my opinion this made the book a lot better because you then start questioning who is on the right side of the law and who isn't. There are quite a lot of twists and turns too and I must say that I was shocked and saddened by the ending. Although shocked, it is an absolutely first class platform for the next book which I cannot wait to get my hands on. Sean Black is certainly coming into his own in this genre and I think this is his best yet, I can only hope that they continue to be this good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad, But Not Great October 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all of Sean Black's novels, and he has certainly been getting better in terms of his writing. His stroylines have always been simple (boarderline cliched), yet entertaining enough to keep you interested. In Gridlock Ryan Lock and his partner Ty are tasked to protect an 'adult performer' Raven Lane, basically a stripper and porn actress, who is having problems with a stalker. Ryan Lock is called in when she finds a decapitated body (belonging to that of another adult performer) in the boot of her car, left there by none other than the stalker. Lock agrees to protect Raven and her down syndrome brother who lives with her. The story escalates as the stalker commits more murders, all related to Raven in some way. As with his previous books, the story is simple, and especially for the first two thirds of the book, is rather stale. Towards the end however, the pace really picks up as suspects come and go and Lock fights to stay in control of the situation. The ending of the story in particular is very well constructed, and actually manages to make you care, which is something new from Sean Black.

What still holds back the book however is the characters. All of them are boring and have no resemblence of emotion. Conversations that should be emotionally driven are bland and it really makes the relationships in the book (especially that of Lock and his girlfriend Carrie) almost annoying to read. I have said this in previous reviews, the books would probably benefit from not having this relationship in the book at all.

Overall, this book is a decent read for those looking for something brain numbing.

Going to keep this review short and to the point.

Gridlock is the best Ryan Lock novel to date! It keeps you engaged from start to finish.

The ending.....I hated it....but the truth is....it was really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! April 3, 2012
By Pam
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Sean Black's ex-military hero, Ryan Lock, is back with a vengeance with "Gridlock". Our hero faces off with a twisted serial killer with a bizarre obsession. I am most impressed with Black's storytelling because he does not shy away from taking risks with the story and the reader may find well-liked characters gone from the landscape. Lock's character grows with every book and we understand his motivations better each time we meet him. I was totally in awe of this book, satisfied and shocked by events that occurred in "Gridlock". My response? SNAPS to author Sean Black for another fast-paced well written thriller and I can't wait for Lock's next outing!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Ryan Lock, Please! January 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all three books by Sean Black and found them entertaining. Even though I would not consider Gridlock (or the other two) a book to keep you up all night anticipating the end, it was still a page turner. I did not anticipate the twists and turns that came about throughout the plot development(pleasant surprise there) and I have mixed feelings about the ending; but hope that this is not the last I see of Ty and Ryan.
