This is simply one of the best Grieg sets out there. There are two other sets one with Neeme Jarvi on Deutsche Grammophon and the other on Brilliant Classics. Skip both of those and get this one first. These are authoritative performances in the highest degree. Outside of Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suites" and the "Piano Concerto" his orchestral work is not that well known or at least not discussed as much as it should be. Anyone interested in hearing one of Norway's finest composers should definitely seek this box set out.

As usual with BIS recordings, the audio quality is impeccible. The performances from the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra are also top-notch. The conductor named Ole Kristian Ruud, who is unknown to me, really impressed me with his command of this music. You can feel the cold, Nordic air blowing through your hair, you can feel the artic chill go through your body, Rudd makes you believe this music and that's exactly what it takes.

Highlights for me are "In Autumn," "Peer Gynt Suites 1 & 2," "Holberg Suite," "Norwegian Dances," "Symphonic Dances," "Signurd Jorsalfar," and "Lyric Suite." Absolutely gorgeous music.

As I said if you're interested in traveling outside of the more familiar Grieg orchestral works, then this set would be a welcome addition to your collection. My highest recommendation.

This is a marvelous release, with fantastic productions of both common pieces, such as the holberg suite, and newer revelations such as the marvelous Opera Fragment[about 45 minutes of pure delight] The choral works[with orchestra] stand out especially for their beauty and, as has already been established, a full version of vocal and choral version of Peer Gynt. Almost every work here receives one of the finest performances of said version I have heard, and this is considerably finer that DG's complete orchestral works. The piano concerto is played by Orika Nogawa{spell} and it is a good version, though in that territory you are facing some of the stiiffest competition on record.
