I purchased this cd as a stocking stuffer for my husband this year. I was especially interested in the last two tracks, the Lyric Pieces. We have the Lyric Pieces for Piano played by Emil Gilels. We used to listen to it all the time when our daughter was born, so we associate the music with her birth. The orchestrated versions are gorgeous and colorful, and beautifully played. Of course, the Holberg Suite is a wonderful piece, and the Gottenburg Symphony doesn't disappoint. It is a beautiful disc and I highly recommend it.

This CD of orchestral music from Edvard Grieg is one that I've had in my collection for a number of years, and I've enjoyed it immensely. Neeme Järvi conducts the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with passion and delicacy.

The disc begins with a performance of Grieg's "From Holberg's Time, Op. 40", which reminds me very much of the string symphonies/serenades for strings that I have enjoyed very much from both Tchaikovsky and Dvořák (Serenades for Strings with Neville Marriner conducting the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is one good recording of those pieces, combined with the Holberg Suite in fact, but Tchaikovsky, Dvorák: String Serenades with Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic is my favorite recording of those two works).

Following the Holberg Suite, the disc continues with four compositions from Grieg, each in two movements: Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34, Two Melodies, Op. 53, Two Nordic Melodies, Op. 63, and finally Two Lyric Pieces, Op. 68.

The performances here are excellent and the recording is faultless. I think that from my standpoint it comes down to whether or not you are looking for a disc of only music from Grieg, in which case I think this is an excellent choice. But if your objective is to get the Holberg Suite and the companion pieces are not the main objective, then I might suggest the previously mentioned recording from Marriner/ASMF which also includes the Tchaikovsky and Dvořák works. Either way I think you will not be disappointed.
