It has been a great thing to watch Leif Ove Andsnes career develop from this, his first major label recording in 1991 to his becoming one of the world's great pianists today. The major labels were good at finding and promoting young talent, especially in the CD era. Mr. Andsnes was one of many in those days of the late 80's and early 90's when CD's were really taking off, though not many of the others are so well known today. Of course, being owned by the big, international pop labels, the big classical labels were celebrity-star oriented, always putting pictures of their performers on their covers, while the smaller, independent classical labels usually used art reproductions. So, one also has to consider that some of their enthusiasm for up and coming artists was that they looked a bit more fresh and youthful than the usual Horowitz, Solti or Karajan.

But in the case of Leif Ove Andsnes, they found the real thing, a talent of considerable proportions. Still now in his forties, he was recently voted into Gramophone Magazine's Hall of Fame, a practically unheard of honor. He has recorded a tremendous variety of repertoire from Mozart to Szymanowski, and enjoys bringing lesser known composers like Geirr Tveitt to his audience. He records concertos, solo piano music and play as part of chamber ensembles, which is how he started before Virgin on small Scandinavian labels like Simax and Bis. Whether he's doing Haydn or Britten, Bartok or Rachmaninov, he knows the composer and how to interpret his music.

It was a natural to launch the career of a young, Norwegian composer with the Grieg; that certainly didn't take any thought, and it was equally natural to include some of Grieg's Lyric Pieces for solo piano. The Liszt is an unusual choice, to be sure.
