Format: Audio CD
Emil Klein may not have a big reputation, but he is a splendid chamber music player with a fine tone. I enjoyed this duo's recording of the Brahms Sonatas very much, and the current album is equally fine. Wolfgang Manz is an extremely underrated pianist. He has made excellent recordings of the Brahms Concerti and Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Here, he is wonderfully idiomatic in the Rachmaninoff. Indeed, his sonority often is reminiscent of Rachmaninoff's himself. The performance by both men is rich sounding and beautifully cultivated. The Grieg is full of energy, with much good characterization of its Peer Gynt sounding motifs. In sum, this is an invigorating album and also may be recommended for its good sound engineering.
