This review is from: Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites Nos. 1 & 2; Lyric Suite; Sigurd Jorasalfar (Audio CD)
I am most fond of much of Grieg's works, especially Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar. This is the consummate recording for me. His rendering of the Peer Gynt Suite is outstanding. In addition to the choral contributions which other recordings omit (this adds much to "The Hall of the Mountain King) Jarvi's pace on Morning Mood and The Hall of the Mountain King is simply the best. Morning Mood on other recordings is played too fast, which at the end looses the awesomeness of morning sunrise to this reviewer. The Gothenburg Symphony performs magnificently, with due accolades given to the woodwinds and horns for their subtle, exquisite performance. I would consider this or an equivalent on Grieg to be a needed part of one's classical collection. It is one of my favorites.

First time I heard Peer Gynt with chorus I wasn't sure I approved. Now it is my favorite. It seems a little flat without the chorus which adds so much more color and texture. I love it!

Marvelous introduction to Edvard Grieg,

This review is from: Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites Nos. 1 & 2; Lyric Suite; Sigurd Jorasalfar (Audio CD)
I bought this CD way back in 2005, and I couldn't stop listening to "Peer Gynt" and "Lyric Suite". But a year later, I bought the box set of Neeme Jarvi's complete Grieg recordings (also on Deutsche Grammophon), and I donated this CD to the library. But just because I donated it doesn't mean I despise it now. The Grieg/Jarvi box set contains the "Lyric Suite" and the complete version of "Peer Gynt". I see the "Peer Gynt Suite" and "Lyric Suite" as the perfect introduction to the Norwegian composer. "Sigurd Jorasalfar" is also a nice addition to this CD, although it can be a bit dull at times. In conclusion, buy this CD if you're desperate for an introduction to Grieg. And if you're already a big fan of Grieg and do not own maestro Jarvi's box set of Grieg's works, then purchase it immediately. You'll miss out on countless amounts of good Romantic music.
