The innovative Mac PnP video adapter allows users to easily connect their Macintosh computers to any PC or compatible display incorporating the Plug and Play protocol. The adapter is compatible with Mac LC, Centris, Quadra, Performa, PowerMac, G3, and PowerBook computers. On the other end, it connects with any PC VGA monitor, including the Plug and Play and Plug and Display monitors, as well as multimedia monitors (microphones require the Griffin Ne-Mic adapter). The Mac PnP is the simplest, most universal adapter solution for connecting PC monitors to a Mac.
The adapter delivers information to the computer regarding the monitor's capabilities, such as manufacturer name, model number, manufacturing date, scanning frequencies, addressable pixels, maximum horizontal and vertical image size, energy saving capabilities, color characteristics, gamma characteristics, sync input, and the monitor's white point. The device can also configure the proper sense code so the computer knows which resolution (or range of resolutions) is safe to enable. It can even provide the Plug and Play data to the computer's video circuitry for exact resolution matching and additional feature support.

I got the Griffin Technology Mac PnP Universal Video Adapter to connect an old Mac to a recent VGA monitor. This device works perfectly and saved our Mac. It was easy to figure out which switch setting to use. A fine product that does the job.
