2.0 out of 5 stars Still looking for a better FM transmitter...
This FM transmitter is easy to use, but the quality is not consistent. Also, I can't adjust the volume on mine. I find myself using it less and less and I'm looking for a better quality product that's still inexpensive. I do like the fact that my iPod is always charging.

Like several of the other Griffin iTrip fm transmitters, this unit can be switched to international mode, which opens up the option to use frequencies lower than 88.1. No US radio stations can broadcast on frequencies lower than 88.1, so now I don't have to worry about interference!

To switch this unit to international mode, press and hold both the plus and minus (+ and -) buttons at the same time. If you hold it a while, it will give you the option to switch between LX and DX modes (stero and mono). If you keep holding the plus and minus button longer, it will give you the option to switch between US and international modes.

My newer old car doesn't have a tape player, only radio and CD... so only one way to listen to the iPod in it, via radio. To my knowledge anyway...
I had an old Belkin transmitter that finally bit it after extensive use. And with the latest and greatest from Apple, I was confused as to what to get to replace it. Did I want the most current Griffin iTrip that "supposedly" charged the iPhone 3G and played the iPod? Expensive. Finally, after much deliberation, I settled on this one. Got it on sale and it made it even more affordable. I figured I have an iPod, why worry if the iPhone can be used with it too? I mean, the iPhone will be the phone phone and I don't really receive or make calls while driving (not since the bluetooth headset broke), and I never seem to run out of battery after 10-12 hours driving long distance. So, the iPod is all I really need to get music, right? So I settled. And I'm pleased! I thought on a whim, I'll try plugging in the iPhone because I forgot the iPod in the house. After telling me it suggested I turn on Airport mode, which I agreed to, I had music and saw the battery charging! My 3G charges and plays with this Griffin FM transmitter!! Who'dda thunk? I'm loving it. I recommend it.
Yes, there's always going to be static-y noise interrupting as we live in a world full of radio waves and all those other waves and wires ready to pick them all up when they get close. Inescapable, I feel. But overall, I live with it. They're temporary annoyances. When they get too bothersome, I simply use the auto-search button and retune my radio and I'm good to go till the next town's waves interrupt again.

When I got my Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter with Auto Dock Connector Cable Attach for iPod (Black) as an Xmas present it was exactly what I had been looking for.

Set up was easy. Plug one end in the old cigarette lighter socket and the other directly into the iPod dock connector (others we'd tried came out of the headphone socket). Tune the radio to one of the programmed frequencies and hit play.

Great sound, minimal interference. Add to this the iPod is charging as you drive and pauses when you turn off the engine.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good, June 4, 2009

This transmitter works great. We were nervous about buying it after reading some poor reviews about the static, but as long as you find a station with static, no static will come through. We've driven through several of the biggest cities in the country using it and have had no problems. Just remember, you have to find a station with static. Any other station won't work. I highly recommend this product.

I have the monster FM transmitter as well and it is not user friendly for changing stations as this one is. I drive up and down the coast so the frequency has to change easily. If you are a local then the monster is great for pre-set but for long distance travel the belkin is much easier to operate if you are driving. I highly recommend changing it to international mode. It definitely made a difference for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change the setting to international & works like a charm!, August 23, 2010
This review is from: Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter with Auto Dock Connector Cable Attach for iPod (Silver/Black) (Electronics)
I've had this transmitter since Christmas and I was mostly unhappy with it...always seemed to have to be fiddling with it to find a "fuzzy" station...just last week I was looking into getting my husband a new FM transmitter for his Ipod Classic and I came across the directions on how to switch the smartscan version over to the international setting...I have to admit I was skeptical, but thought it was worth a try as I was most unhappy with it as it was. So on my latest car trip, I printed out the directions and made the switch to international and WOW! Such a difference. Not sure why Griffin doesn't provide this tip to its customers, but I'm sure thankful for the techy people out there who do figure this stuff out and then share it with the rest of us. Now I never have to fiddle with the transmitter when in use...I set my car radio to 87.9 and go...awesome sound quality, no fuzz, and best of all, I am now super happy with my purchase. I will be getting my husband one of these and will certainly make sure we change his transmitter over to the international setting as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars It charges the iPhone 3G!, June 20, 2010

This is the best FM transmitter I have owned, and I have owned a few. The International setting trick, to use frequency 87.9, works like a dream and the sound quality is near cd quality. If your radio can tune to that frequency you will never need to change the setting. The best part is, it charged my iPhone. That, coupled with the long cord, makes this indispensable for me. So glad my son bought this for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Switching to international mode for itrip with smartscan, November 8, 2009
This review is from: Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter with Auto Dock Connector Cable Attach for iPod (Silver/Black) (Electronics)
For best results, switch to international mode. The instructions are slightly different for the itrip with smartscan. Hold down the +/- button until you see LX flashing, keep holding it down until you see US, click the smartscan button until INTL is selected. Select 87.7 or even 87.5 if your radio will tune into that setting since these frequencies aren't used in North America so it should make the sound come in clear. Switching to DX will make the signal a sound a little better. The sound is still not as good as having an aux in plug to your ipod but it's good enough for most. Works well with the ipod touch 1G.Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter with Auto Dock Connector Cable Attach for iPod (Black)
