The grill gripper is great for lifting any type of grill grate and keeps your hands clean.

It is good with the stopck, stainless grates that come with most grills, but if you plan to use a cast iron grate (and you should) these don't work well.
Robert Sparks
Once you get the angle right for gripping the grill, it's easy to move the grill around without getting black and/or burned hands.

My wife bought this to go along with the BGE she gave me for father's day. I personally didn't think it was going to be worth trying. Boy, was I wrong. This is an absolute necessity for picking up the grill plate. It is a very heavy grill made of cast iron and the rungs are close together, making it even more difficult to pick up. I don't think pliers would work and fingers alone are impossible (even when it's cold). This grill gripper works great and you will NEVER regret getting it.

False lead--- did not live up to advert.
It is promoted as a "grill" gripper
It actually has a label of Pizza Pan gripper
two different things altogether...............
Have the ad changed to pizza pan gripper.
I bought it thinking it was to be used to lift
a large grill grate -no way it will do that.......

MISLEADING ADVERTISEMENT ...Would not have purchased
it if knowing that it was too small for the (as advertised) job!!

We use this tool to grip the hot, or before grilling, very greasy cooking grate of the new Weber Charcoal grill. The tool is strong enough to hold the grate horizontal, to lift it of its four support angles, or place it over the fiery-hot charcoal without problems.

I wish Weber would design a product-specific device of their own. Until then, this tool works fine and can easily be operated bu a gloved hand.

OK, no one really needs a grill gripper, do they. That is why we have pliers in our tool boxes at home or long handled grill forks. But you know, this thing really works, makes lifting the grill convenient (you will need gloves to hold it though when the charcoal is already hot because this gripper is a short handled one) and you do not have to clean the grill goo off of it when you are done. And if you can afford the Egg in the first place, the price of ths tool will not kill you.

I would not purchase this for use with a heavy cast iron grate. It is good with the stopck, stainless grates that come with most grills, but if you plan to use a cast iron grate (and you should) these don't work well.

Do you have a nice cast-iron grate, or similar heavy duty grate upgrade, and were looking for a tool to easily lift and maneuver it? Then DON'T BUY this.
Quite simply, it doesn't expand large enough to be able to grab it.

Would it work for the standard, light-weight, narrow steel stock BBQ grates? I'm sure. It seems capable - so is a screwdriver or a pair of sturdy BBQ tongs or even some grill brushes. No one needs a special tool for a stock grill grate. It's light and easy to move with any tool.

But for those of us who have upgraded to a heavier grate, like cast iron, with very thick bars and narrow spaces, it's a bit harder (for now I've been using a screwdriver to lift, then a heat resistant glove to grab and move quickly). This sort of tool is advertised as a solution to that and it FAILS completely. Looking at the design, it would have been very easy to make the inner grip plate adjustable to accommodate this thing's intended purpose of being able to grip any grate. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

TLDR Version:
Have a cast-iron or similar grate: This thing doesn't get wide enough to grab it.
Have a standard, stock steel grate: You don't need a "gripper." Use pliers or tongs or literally just about anything.

I needed this for an additional green egg I had moved to another house. This does not hold the grill properly
and will allow it to move and touch your hand. I am glad I tried it out on a unheated grill. I went to the big green
egg store and purchased the real thing. I guess I will throw this thing away.

It does the job and works ok for me. Looks like it is resistant to rust but time will tell.
