Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Better Homes and Gardens's The New Grilling Book opens with an introduction offering good advice on grill types, fuel types, safety, and maintenance basics. The several hundred recipes include condiments, appetizers, main dishes, and desserts--all prepared right on the grill. Each recipe has specific directions for charcoal and gas grills, along with a chapter on smoke cooking. You'll find the usual suspects, with recipes for ribs, steaks, and vegetables, but there's some less-than-usual fare, including Polenta with Ratatouille and Banana-Chocolate Tiramisu. The photography, lightly peppered throughout, is quite striking, and the "Wise Advice" commentary includes great suggestions on picking the freshest seafoods and proper poultry handling, as well as ranking beef cuts by the most to the least tender. A full international array of styles and flavors is present, including Tex-Mex, Asian, Mediterranean, Polynesian, and much more. The New Grilling Book is packed with a great wealth of information and ideas for novice and seasoned grillers alike. --Teresa Simanton

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, April 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Grilling Book (Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen) (Ring-bound)
If you're looking for a cookbook with grilling recipes for dishes that you can recognize, pronounce, shop for, easily prepare, and still wow guests with then this is the grilling book for you.

The book is well organized making it very user friendly. You're not going to find exotic dishes here but you will find easy to make great recipes.

Th book breaks recipes down into 8 categories -condiements, appetizers/sidesdesserts, beef/veal/lamb, pork, chicken/turkey, fish/shellfish, game/fowl, and smokecooking. The condiment section includes sauces and rubs.

Everything I've made so far has been easy to shop for, easy to make, and easy on the taste buds

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book on grilling!, October 11, 2002
This review is from: The New Grilling Book (Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen) (Ring-bound)
I bought this book while trying to expand my collection of grilling recipes. I enjoy cooking on the grill and I wanted to move beyond the simple hamburgers, hot dogs, and barbequed chicken parts. I looked at a variety of books on the subject, and this one struck me as a good value. I have not been disappointed.

The first thing about this book that grabbed my attention is that is it organized and bound like Betty Crocker's Cookbook, in a 3-ring binder with divider tabs. Everything is well laid out and organized in such a manner that if you are looking for specific recipes that are in this book, you have no excuse if you cannot find them.

Sections include beef, pork, fish, and poultry as main dishes. There is also a section for appetizers. In a nutshell, the sections are clear, sensible, and well planned. Finding different forms of beef burgers will be in the beef section, not spread all over.

I have obviously not tried all of the recipes in this book, but the ones I have tried have been big hits with the family. The recipes balance flavors well and give the cook an excellent foundation should the cook want to experiment and tweak a little bit. The book does *not* help you in the flavor department if you have a tendency to burn stuff...

Each recipe has different cooking instructions corresponding to charcoal grills and gas grills. This is a nice feature that makes this book accessible to a wider audience.

Overall, this is a great book for someone wanting to do more grilling. It is well organized, has lots of pictures, well written...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, January 16, 2001
This review is from: The New Grilling Book (Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen) (Ring-bound)
This book is fantastic. It is the most recent additon my husband and I have made to our collection of Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks, and it doesn't disappoint.

The recipes are easy to prepare, the instructions are comprehensive enough that is is basically impossible to make a mistake. The book also explores interesting flavour combinations that might not necessarily come to mind, otherwise.

It is also a great resource for people who are not really familiar with grilling, or who want to learn how to grill different foods. For example, fish and shellfish wasn't ever something I had tried to cook outdoors before getting this book. Now, it is one of my family's favourites.
