Product Description

The bold colors of this beautifully handmade wooden rainbow will fire your child's imagination and creativity, and provide hours of open-ended play. This amazing Waldorf-inspired multi-use toy for toddlers, kids and adults is Grimm's the largest rainbow, measuring over 14 inches long, with 12 colorful pieces. This wonderfully simple, yet versatile design has endless possibilities.

Children will learn about colors, refine hand-eye coordination and motor skills, as well as expand their creative abilities, while being immersed in critical thinking and deep play. Stacking, nesting and building stimulates reasoning skills, essential problem solving activities for children. The tactile nature of wood and bright colors will stimulate both very young as well as older children. When not nested, kids can use the colorful arches as bridges, tunnels, fences, and any number of unique creations. The rainbow can be telescoped and stacked in a variety of creative ways. Use the arches as targets for marble games (look for both sizes of Grimm's wooden marbles!) The pieces can be used together or individually as bridges, tunnels, seesaws, fences, houses, doll cradles or caves. The possibilities are boundless! With so many uses for this heirloom-quality Rainbow, this is a toy that will accompany your child for a long time and will surely be rediscovered many times along the way. Grimm's aims to help children discover and develop their own creativity.

Comes minimally packaged in clear shrink wrap. Size is 14.4 x 7.1 x 2.9 inches. All colors are water based and in accordance with EN 71, are harmless to your health and suitable for children toys.

Please note: The rainbow can only be nested from one side. This adds another problem-solving element to the "puzzle" aspect of this toy: if the arch will not easily nest under the previous arch, it must be flipped over horizontally, and should fit from that side.

We have several other Spiel & Holz toys, including the stacking bowls and ring stackers. We love them all, and I was excited to purchase this large rainbow for my toddler. However, the first one we received disappointed me because it was not symmetrical. The pieces could only stack in one direction, and if one was reversed, it would not stack neatly (would have a gap, and not fit all the way down). Obviously, this would frustrate a very young child when putting it together. The replacement we received also had the same problem, though not as severe as the first, so we kept it.

Both of my boys (ages 1 and 4 at the time) played with it often, usually as tunnels for trains and cars. After a few months of play, the largest red arch snapped in half when my toddler put his weight on it. I realize this is possible with wood, and it snapped right along the grain line, but I would have expected such a pricey piece of wood to hold up a little better to normal toddler play.

I don't regret purchasing it, and it *is* a fun item that promotes open-ended play, but I think some additional quality control would be helpful.

My son received the smaller version of this toy from his grandmother for his first birthday and loved it. He and his four year old brother play with it everyday making towers, caves, mountains, fortresses, boats and beds. It is amazingly well made; it might be the only toy yet they haven't broken in their rough housing and even as small as it is it adds beauty wherever it is in our home. It might also be their only toy that they like as much now as when they received it.

Therefore, when we walked into the new local toy shop and saw this extra large version in the window we were delighted! My son's jaws dropped and they pleaded for it to be on their Christmas list. An email went to grandma and it will be our group present this year. I much prefer receiving one well made, beautiful toy that allows for open ended play than one hundred lesser items. It is better for a child's mind, building a peaceful home, and I might say for their character as well.

This is a dream toy. It's completely open ended, durable, and gorgeous enough that you'll want to save it for the grandchildren. It's impressively large and looks cheerful sitting on a shelf, an ideal addition to any nursery or playroom. We've had it less than a month and so far my toddler has used it as tunnels for his trains and as a stacker. Our baby likes to take it apart over and over. I would say this is one of the absolute best baby shower or 1st birthday gifts, although it's a marvelous gift for toddlers and kindergarteners.

This toy seems pricey, but can be had at a reasonable price if you wait and watch. We paid $72 for ours with shipping/tax included and it's been 100% worth it. Two $35 plastic toys would have cost the same, but wouldn't be something we'd be saving for future generations. This rainbow is likely to stay with our family forever, assuming we can keep it away from our pets :)

I would recommend a protective finish of beeswax/olive oil or salad bowl finish, although I haven't tried one on ours yet.

This was a splurge for me; I usually stick to more economical materials including found objects from around the house or thrift stores/yard sales. But Grimm's big rainbow stacker has been on my wishlist for years now and I finally gave in and bought one. It does not disappoint! It is big. It is beautiful. It can be used for many play activities, from block play to dramatic play.

I am not sure if it's better than bamboo arches which may be a little more open-ended (I had to choose between them and don't have both to compare). But it is probably more attention-grabbing! As with all Grimm's sets, I recommend giving this stacker to your child in loose pieces (as blocks) rather than as a completed puzzle, so he/she can explore them in an open-ended way and discover that they stack on his/her own. :)

Pros:
- beautifully handmade
- vibrantly colored
- stained rather than painted, adding character and allowing pieces to stack without slipping

Cons:
- even though this is the "extra large" stacker, it is still a little smaller than I'd like: if you have the tools and the know-how, consider making one yourself on a larger scale with one of the free patterns & tutorials available online
- delicate and brittle; I am not sure how well this will hold up through the years

This toy is pretty & nice but it only goes together one direction. so it's not exactly a size stacking toy because you can't just start with the smallest & stack the rainbow together. You have to also see which way it fits. I got the ECR4Kids Arches & those are much stronger & the kids are having more fun with them (using them as bridges over train tracks & things like that). Also, instead of this puzzle I ended up keeping the "Grimms "Little Flower" Nesting Blocks" (google it & it'll come up) It's beautiful and "reversible" (doesn't just go together one way like the rainbow). My kids enjoy playing with the flower puzzle more (because they don't have to spend time figuring out which way the puzzle fits together. Also, the blooming flower puzzle has thicker arches so they are much more durable.
