About the Author

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786 1859), were German academics best known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales, which became popular. Jacob also did academic work in linguistics, related to how the sounds in words shift over time (Grimm's law), and together they wrote a German dictionary. They are among the best-known story tellers of folk tales from Europe, and their work popularized such tales as "Rumpelstiltskin"(German: Rumpelstilzchen), "Snow White", "Sleeping Beauty", "Rapunzel", "Cinderella"(German: Aschenputtel), "Hansel and Gretel(German: Hänsel und Gretel)", and "The Frog Prince"(German: Der Froschkonig). --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

My first Calla Edition was Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a work of extraordinary beauty and I've been collecting the various titles issued by Calla Editions since. The quality of each Calla Edition is superior in terms of binding, paper quality, the illustrations, and content. These Calla Editions are a must-have in every collector's library and will bring great pleasure to bibliophiles.
This 2010 Calla Edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales contains a selection of stories from The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated by Mrs. Edgar Lucas, and which was originally published by Doubleday, Page, and Co., New York, in 1909. There are 40 full-color plates by Arthur Rackham as well as 28 black-and-white illustrations. Each illustration is listed at the beginning of the book with page references. The stories contained within this collection are:
The Golden Bird
Jorinda and Joringel
The Bremen Town Musicians
The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean
Briar Rose
The Twelve Dancing Princesses
The Fisherman and his Wife
The Wren and the Bear
The Frog Prince
The Cat and Mouse in Partnership
The Goosegirl
The Adventures of Chanticleer and Partlet
Rapunzel
The Valiant Tailor
Hansel and Grethel
Red Riding Hood
The Robber Bridegroom
Tom Thumb
Rumpelstiltskin
Clever Grethel
The Old Man and his Grandson
Sweetheart Roland
Snowdrop
Ashenputtel
The White Snake
The Wolf and the Seven Kids
The Queen Bee
The Elves and the Shoemaker
The Four Clever Brothers
The Lady and the Lion
The Golden Goose
The Water of Life
The King of the Golden Mountain
Doctor Know-All
The Seven Ravens
The Youth who could not Shudder
King Thrushbeard
The book is printed on 100# Utopia II Ivory dull (the paper is heavy and feels like card stock), and bound in Pearl Linen. I enjoy reading and perusing all of my Calla Edition books. These are definitely heirloom quality books that can be treasured for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grimm's Fairy Tales April 28, 2011
By Mithril
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I haven't actually read this version of Grimm's (I've read it twice in the past and it's kinda far down the to-reread list at the moment) but I wanted to let potential readers know that this version has an ACTIVE TABLE OF CONTENTS! Yay! That means everyone can stop whining about the other version.

Well, at least until you realize that this only has 64 of the 210-ish stories that should be in Grimm's. From what I remember this has mostly the good stories, so I don't know that you'd be missing out by not reading all 200. But if you're determined, there's always the AToC-less Household Tales by Brothers Grimm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated volume February 18, 2011

This is my first Calla Editions purchase, and I am definitely inspired to buy more after receiving Grimm's Fairy Tales. The paper quality is excellent, the translation is good, and the full color illustrations are wonderful. I know I will treasure this volume and I cannot wait to share it with my young daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made about children
Grimm has a way of making stories about children. Fables. But a lot of them are dark and creepy. It's nice to read though I would not read most to children. Read more
