I have several versions of the Grimm's Fairy Tales. This is a great collection. While the language style of the translations is sometimes a bit off, it adds to the mood of the stories. The only exception I take to the book is the part of the title that says "50 illustrations", while I am assuming the count is correct, as I didn't count them, I would not say that the very small icons enhance any of the stories. If you are expecting illustrations similar to the book cover you will be very disappointed.

Even with the minor issues I still enjoyed this version of the traditional tales. As some of these tales follow the original purpose of teaching lessons the hard way I would not recommend them for small children. Examples include Hansel and Gretel's Mother was the one who left them in the forest. In the same story the witch gets cooked. In one story a father tries to marry his daughter. Clever Hans threw calves eyes at his intended. A small boy suckles a giant and in turn becomes a bully.

The book has a clickable TOC, but you can't click on "Go" and "Table of Contents" to get there.

If you like the traditional versions of the fairy tales and not the new kiddie PC versions, you will enjoy this.

I recommend this collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grimm's Fairy Tales review July 18, 2012

This is a great, comprehensive collection of Grimm's Fairy Tales. The only thing I don't like is that you can't go to Table Of Contents to select a story. You have to go to the beginning and scroll through. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book of tales. November 13, 2012

This is a well put together compilation of the Grimm's Tales that are accompanied by very good pictures. My friend's daughter was not familiar with all of Grimm's tales and was very excited to read this also. It was a great chance for her to become familiar and decide if she would like a hard bound version of her own.

I probably have bought five different versions of Grimm's Fairy Tales for my library. although some vanished when my children began having children of their own. As often happens, I went to re-read a favorite tale, and found the book with that version in it had gone off to enthrall my grandkids in the wilds of Minnesota.

So I bought a Kindle version I thought would be the same, and it does have that specific story in it. But every page of the book so far (I've read perhaps 50 of the stories randomly selected) has at least one, and often as many as 20, typos of the kind that come from dumping an uncorrected OCR read into a digital document. Most annoying are the instances in which a character's name is spelled several different ways on the same page!

Yes, it was a bargain price. If I had known when I bought it that the bargain would entail this over-abundance of typos, I would have selected a different edition. I can't recommend it, unless you really can't afford better quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite pleased October 13, 2013

In my search for good editions of these tales, I have found this edition to be very good. I am enjoying rereading the stories of my youth in the un-Disneyed versions. So different than what has happened to these tales since.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Never Know May 2, 2013

A great read. These aren't fairy tales for kids. They're folk tales for everyone. Sometimes the princess lives happily ever after. Sometimes the cat eats the mouse or the ghost gets a grisly revenge.
The translation is generally excellent. There are a few typos, which stands out in a book that is otherwise polished.

5.0 out of 5 stars When I was a kid
When I was a kid my mom would read some of them to us. To have them of my very own and not take up shelf space is awesome.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but poor formattting.
The book is very complete with often several variations of the same story, but there are no quotation marks to distinguish dialogue from narration. Read more
