Book Description

4 and upP and up
Jacob and Wilhelm's first book of fairy tales, Children's and Household Tales, published in 1812, included 86 folktales, and was an instant success. Shortly thereafter, the brothers incorporated 70 more stories in their next volume of "Grimm's Fairy Tales." This continued for six more editions! The complete collection contains over 200 stories, and is probably the best-known work of German literature. Filled with fantasy, magic, and talking animals, these enchanting tales for children often teach a lesson about moral values, and right from wrong. Reader Laura Paton's warmth and flair for characters, paired with bright and exciting classical music, results in a memorable production that younger listeners will enjoy again and again. Contains 15 delightful tales.

From AudioFile

British actors present seven of Chaucer's classic tales in modern verse. Tim Pigott-Smith opens with "The Friar's Tale," recounting the Summoner's pact with the devil in a clear and expressive voice. Timothy West's portrayal of "The Seaman's Tale" lags a bit when the long-suffering wife's vocal characterization changes mid-speech. Rosalind Shanks lends sweet sadness to the murder and miracle comprising "The Prioress's Tale." Genuine angst rings through Sean Barrett's depiction of "The Manciple's Tale," as a husband takes decisive action on a crow's advice. Michael Maloney applies a driving rhythm as a young woman chooses death over loss of virtue in "The Physician's Tale." This clear and compelling collection is certain to appeal to both novice and experienced Chaucer readers. Bravo to Naxos for recording these tales in their original, unvarnished form. Admittedly dark at times, but, then again, so is life-- no matter how much we try to sugarcoat, better to prepare our kids what lies ahead with the help of magical examples and traditional folktales. These will bring out the kid by the campfire in all. Kudos to Laura Paton's animated readings. A great pleasure to listen to at bedtime, with or without the kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well read., January 3, 2011

My 2 children, aged 6 and 9, are captivated by these stories. Yes, some of them are quite dark but children are fascinated by them and it can expand their imaginations. They ask for these stories again and again. We want more!

The actress who reads the stories in this second installment of the grimms' tales does a lovely job, she reads at a good clip, not too fast for anyone 5 or above. The choice of very not german music in the introductions of the stories is odd and out of place.
