5.0 out of 5 stars Coroner : "Grin"
This is the last studio release from Coroner. It's also one of their most impressive releases ever. "Grin" takes over where "Mental Vortex" left off, but it also goes beyond in many ways. It's certainly their most unique release from start to finish....

3.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying piece of work
Grin--Coroner's fifth full-length album--was released in 1993. Ten tracks are contained--"Dream Path," "The Lethargic Age," "Internal Conflicts," "Caveat (To the Coming)," "Serpent Moves," "Status: Still Thinking," "Theme for Silence," "Paralized, Mesmerized," "Grin (Nails Hurt)," and "Host." The material is in a metal musical direction with progressive leanings...

This is the last studio release from Coroner. It's also one of their most impressive releases ever. "Grin" takes over where "Mental Vortex" left off, but it also goes beyond in many ways. It's certainly their most unique release from start to finish....

Guitarist Tommy T. Baron has always been incredible, and on "Grin", he raises the bar even higher. His solos are masterpieces, and this releases is full of some of his best ever. He's one of the best guitarists in Heavy Metal history no doubt.....

The music on "Grin" is not quite as "in your face" as previous efforts, and the sound is a little more controlled when it comes to the blinding speed riffs, and screaming out lyrics. "Grin" has some of that, but for the most part, it's very evenly balanced, and very well controlled. That makes it very enoyable to listen to....

I think "Mental Vortex" still holds the top spot as Coroner's best, but "Grin", with it's unique sound and direction, puts it as a very close second. This is certainly worth five stars, and is a highly recommended masterpiece. It's just impossible to find....

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Testament, December 26, 2007
This review is from: Grin (Audio CD)
This album is quite difficult to find...but definitely worth the time and money spent on it : it's pure pleasure.

Tommy Baron skills are just so d**mn good, and his solos on this album are even better than thoses on "Mental Vortex". I think is one of the most gifted guitar player from Metal, along with Alex Skolnick.
But is Grin better than Mental Vortex ? Hard to say honestly..one reviewer wrote that it continues where Mental Vortex stop... and evoluate magnificently I will add..It's all about theses dark atmospheres punctuated by killer solos and clever rythm guitar, incredibles breaks, everything is at his place at the right time, as usual with Coroner. The production is even better than "Mental.."
Special mention for Mesmerized / paralyzed : a song of 8 minutes, maybe the most intense of it all.
Just imagine how Coroner would have evoluate with the quality of the new production they had at last...

But there's maybe a good news : it seems they are preparing a reunion tour............

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome progression from one of the best, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Grin (Audio CD)
Been a Coroner fan since I was a kid.

While "Grin" isn't the artful and controlled chaos of the previous efforts, it's just as good, owing to its refinement and their push into other areas. Not as fast, but a dark and polished sound that is highly interesting and entertaining. There is some more directions they go in, but the sound is undeniably Coroner.
Anyone who's a fan of them will love Grin. The essence of their sound is still there, while they dabble into some different areas for their sound, including some eerie female vocals at the end and Ron making his voice resemble death vocals more during some parts.

Awesome, just awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coroner's Best Album...yes, better than MV, July 15, 2010

THIS is Coroner's crowning achievement.

Probably the most criminally underrated band from the original Thrash movement, Coroner put out 5 great albums.

R.I.P. and Punishment suffer from bad production, No More Color from just being the worst of the 5 (but still awesome). Mental Vortex is incredible, and definitely deserves it's place among most fans as Coroner's best.

BUT, of all the Coroner albums, the one I still play more often than any other is Grin.

The main riff for the song Grin could be my favorite riff of all time. Tommy Baron is one of the best guitarists of all time, and the solos and riffs on this album show why. I would list my personal favorites, but they all rule (okay, Grin, Status and Serpent are probably my favorites).

If you are looking to expand your music collection, you can't go wrong with any Coroner album. But get this or Mental Vortex 1st!

NAILS...IN...MY...BRAIN...NAILS...HURT!

4.0 out of 5 stars slight change in direction(growth of musical talent), April 13, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Grin (Audio Cassette)
this cd is the new step from mental vortex more consintrated on the deepth and growth od their musical development.-simply they started thrash and have grown into great muscial conductors in the master piece of metal.I must admit i hear a bit of Vio-Vod's space like jazziness in spots.not for the old school fans of thrash but definity for fans of growth in music/into something more diamic and intense yet heavy music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-Dissapointing last release from Coroner, October 18, 2008

This is Coroner's last studio album. After this they released a remixes and lost songs albums but none of it matched the virtuosity found here. This album is decidedly down-paced from previous efforts by this amazingly talented and highly underrated band. The technicality of the riffs has gone up noticeably and speed has been replaced with a dark eerie moodiness and more of a groove-oriented feel. Search on YouTube to see a handful of people playing these riffs to get an idea of the sheer technical complexity to the songs, namely odd-meters and lots of syncopated rhythms. Fans of the previous albums won't be disappointed as the solos are simply home-runs on this album, most notably the one from "Internal Conflicts" which is arguably his best ever. Recommended for all fans of Corner or technical thrash metal.

3.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying piece of work, September 2, 2006
This review is from: Grin (Audio CD)
Grin--Coroner's fifth full-length album--was released in 1993. Ten tracks are contained--"Dream Path," "The Lethargic Age," "Internal Conflicts," "Caveat (To the Coming)," "Serpent Moves," "Status: Still Thinking," "Theme for Silence," "Paralized, Mesmerized," "Grin (Nails Hurt)," and "Host." The material is in a metal musical direction with progressive leanings. Altogether, the songwriting is satisfying, the musicianship is proficient, and the sound quality is gratifying. Ron Royce is a distinctive, likeable vocalist that does not disappoint. The guitar playing of Tommy T. Baron is accomplished. Marquis Marky's drumming is also skilled. An interesting-sounding instrument, the didgeridoo, is utilized on two instrumentals, "Dream Path" and "Theme for Silence." My favorite song is "Caveat (To the Coming)." "Caveat (To the Coming)" sports an attractive, memorable intro and magnetic drumming from Marky. The hard-hitting "Internal Conflicts" is an example of another pleasing composition, with its infectious, indelible guitar riffs from Baron and frenetic, gripping drumming from Marky. The CD insert includes fragments of the song lyrics and an illustration. In addition, an illustration of the group is on the back of the CD jewel case. The disc is almost 58 minutes. Grin is a recommendable piece of work.
