I have always been a fan of the Alcoholic Death Metal Gods, and I have to say that Grind Bastards shows that they are still in the hunt for one of the best Death Metal Bands of the 90's. If you like Grave, Old Entombed, Dismember, this group is for you. Favorite tracks include, Agonised, title track, and Neverbomb.

After listening to "The dreams you dread", their previous album, I was a little disappointed. It's a good album but repetitive and monotonous or boring, if you want. Like if the album was lacking of brilliance. But now you have "Grind Bastard".
This is totally the opposite. You'll find a diverse album, with lots of different tempos, speeds and changes of rhythms. With a strengthened sound, Benediction delivers an album with impeccable song writing. They found here what was missing in the previous one. A turn in their music, nothing new, but they dared to take their music one step further, like the "jumping" riffs in "Deadfall" or the intrincate "Grind Bastard". It's a mixture of their old and new stuff.

You have fast songs such as "Nervebomb", "We the freed" or "Carcinoma Angel". Mid tempos like "West of hell", "Grind bastard" or "The bodiless". And two spectacular covers: Iron Maiden's "Electric eye" and Twisted Sister's "Destroyer". Two great covers empowered by Benediction's sound.
"Deadfall" and "Agonised" are the first two songs. Both catchy and hooky gems, with that powerful, screaming and rotten sound, very heavy and intense, and unique at the same time, that show how much the band has grown up musically. And then album continues. Everything soaked with Benediction's intense, cool and constant arrangements.

You also have the explanation for all the lyrics; what inspired them in each song.

There's nothing to ad. 14 songs of the best death metal you can find. A great album in any way you look at it. Benediction's finest hour!

Many said Dreams You Dread was lacking and was monotonous. Grind Bastard should liven those people up who felt this way as it returns some of their older, more brutal sound. Overall, it feels like the band decided to prove the D.Y.D. detractors wrong in saying they were boring.

This album features the same lineup being:

One thing discriminating ears will pick up is the excellent production, as Andy Sneap (Nevermore, Cradle of Filth, Arch Enemy, Accept, and MANY others) joins in on the production. The album as a whole is pounding and gives and air of total power. This band is in top form on this one. Excellent riffs, outstanding drumming (I'm a drummer so I notice), and pure headbanging bliss.

Deadfall: 10/10. Featured on Nuclear Blasts' compilation album Death Is Just The Beginning V, it opens with a very Led Zeppelinesque reverb from side to side, and then the rhythm kicks in. Changing tempos from heavy grind to speed and aggression, it tells a sordid tale of love.

Agonised: 10/10. This one has some killer double bass drum sections and some old fashioned death metal riffs. Dave sounds pissed on this one, making the song more emotive.

West Of Hell: 10/10. A choppy mid tempo speed for a welcome change and Dave growls his throat out. This song is actually dedicated to the band Macabre.

Magnificat: 10/10. Opens with a killer bass line and then breaks into a headbanging double bass power riff. This song features some lines written by the David Berkowitz, AKA The Son of Sam. I won't point them out, after all you have to find out things for yourself. Let's just say you'll soon be singing along with the song when the music stops for the "magnificat!" line.

Nervebomb: 9/10. Opening right up into a brutal speed death metal riff, which sounds like a classic Slayer style of singing, this just pummels you into submission before changing into an ultra heavy grind section. The mid tempo is one you cannot resist headbanging to. Finally it finishes with a quick speed section to remind you what it was about.

Electric Eye: 8/10. Yes, it's the classic Judas Priest song they're covering (first of three covers), they play it exactly like JP would've done it, they just added the Benediction touch to it. Imagine Rob Halford growling instead of his scream piercing your woofers! A very quality cover song giving props to one of their influences.

Grind Bastard: 9/10. This one has a sound all it's own, with a non conventional riff and drum rhythm. Lots of mood changes, lots of speed changes, but no let up of the aggression a song like this would have. We all have someone in mind when listening to this one, causing that little extra oomph when "bastard" is said.

Shadow World: 8/10. Another pounding, riff laden tune that tells the story of mankind. Not a pretty story but a powerful song meant to convey their thoughts.

The Bodiless: 8/10. Opens up with a very Slayer-like series of guitar riffs, and lyrically the Slayer guys would be proud. Expect a riff heavy 5 and a half minutes that are just brutal to the senses, this is one you want to turn the amp up to 11 on.

Carcinoma Angel: 8/10. Double bass drums lead the way and then goes to a quick mid tempo beat that has some intricate guitar licks throughout mixed in with that crunching wall of guitar riffs. This feels like it was just drawn forth from the depths of their souls.

We The Freed: 8/10. I hear more Slayer in this one as it opens, a speed hammer to your brain. Just wish the song wasn't so short. The middle break gives you a few seconds to breathe before the finish.

Destroyer: 10/10. Another cover song, this time a Twisted Sister song from their Under The Blade. Now I do like TS, but this thing is just beyond heavy, it's foreboding. I wonder what Dee Snider thinks of this version, because it's better than the original in my opinion.

I: 9/10. Classic death metal riffs and power. The middle has a break to it for the grind fans, and they don't disappoint. This grind is carried until the end of the song which fades out.

We Are The League: 8/10. In my opinion, this is the lightest song on the entire album. The third cover song, this one by the Anti Nowhere League. It's definitely a punk song but it fits Benedictions' attitude and is good to hear these grinding madmen do something such as this.

Overall, this should be considered a required album for anyone into death or grind metal because these guys are HEAVY. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed with it.
